Firmware update. Current or subsequent order.
« on: February 13, 2013, 11:50:05 PM »

Hello all,
I tried to update my firmware on my DIR 615 by clicking the check now button within the routers parameters and got the file DIR615C1_FW311NAB04.bin

The update bombed.

I have hardware ver. C1 Firmware ver. 3.11NA  dated June 23, 2009.

Should I try and install the other firmwares in subsequent order, i.e. ver 3.11NA (dated 7/15/2009), then ver. 3.12 and then ver. 3.13

Or should the latest and greatest cover them all?

Region: Midwest.
Wireless to router.
No factory reset.
ISP Ser. Cable
ISP Router. Stand Alone.
Modem Make & Model. I have to get up for that one, will have to report back tomorrow.  :D

Thanks.....

Link>Welcome!

Is the router exhibiting problems or are you just wanting to update? If it's not having any problems, I would recommend keeping what's loaded unless you are being effected by something in the release notes for newer versions.

You can upgrade directly to v3.13.

If your wanting to update, please follow this:

Thanks for responding Nutz.

As far as problems go, no.  Internet access is not a problem.  Personally I feel it could be a little faster compared to other D-links I've been on with the same computer. So, thought an update might be in line.

However, I did try to use some of the features in the router i.e. website filters. The one filter I did add for the other computer locked it from any and all internet access. Followed the directions on how to do this. Was it me?  Was it the router?  :-\

Also, have a BB and the connection with the router is well.... flaky.

Any thought, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any thought, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lets see if we can help do some troubleshooting and configuration before attempting a FW upgrade:

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Hey Mr. Nutz.... I did my assignment for today and just finished your recommendations on my settings. So far I test drove it around the block and it does appear to be somewhat quicker.  ;)

I went line by line from your last response and did what you recommended (if I could).
I'll highlight any questionable or problems areas for your review.

Comcast ~ Cable

Stand Alone Modem: Arris CM450A

WAN Traffic Shaping is now off.

Game Fuel - Dose not appear to be an option with this firmware.  Under the advance tab, correct?

Advance DNS Ser.  Not checked.

DNS Relay is checked.

Added machines to the DHCP Reservation List.  The same machines are in the "Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients, which I presume is okay?

Where do you "ensure devices are set to obtain an IP address"?

IPv6 Connection Type is set to "Link-local only"

NAT Endpoint Filtering: Was Address Restricted, now Endpoint Ind.
TCP Endpoint Filtering: Was Port and Address Restricted, now Endpoint Ind.

UPNP: Set
Multicast Stream: Is now set.

Where do you locate the uPnP testing Port Forwarding rules to disable?

WAN Port Speed is set to - Auto

On the time & date...  The calendar stops at 2012!

Wireless Modes: Went with the mix G & N instead of the G, N & B

Channel Width is set to 20 Mhz.

You may have to walk me through the "setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel"

Security is set to WPA-Personal.

In the WPA Section:  WPA Mode: Is set to Auto (WPA or WPA2)
Cipher Type: TKIP& AES  <=== Is this what you recommed changing to WPA2/AES Only?

As far as what wireless devices are connected 1). Laptop 2). BB mobile

Yes to the cordless house phones operating @ the 900 Mhz range.

Yes there are other routers in my area.  Just d/l the newest version of InSSIDer. They've really tweaked that tool. It found more than the first version did.  Awesome!
As far as how many. When I'm in the basement 3-4. Upstairs, 15-17. The closest is my neighbor who runs a dlink also.  :)

Sorry Nutz, am not seeing the WISH & WPS under which section of Advance?

Turned off the Short GI

WLAN Partition was unchecked.

Don't have a "Extra Wireless Protection"

WMM was enabled. Will read the link to WMM.

Once again any thoughts, comment, suggestions are always greatly appreciated.

Any chance of upgrading to a newer modem or a Motorola SB 6121 or 6141? We've seen some issues with Arris modems and external routers.

WAN Traffic Shaping is now off.

Having this many other wifi near by can be problematic. Lets see how the new settings work for you before we go any farther on tweaking. Let us know if you see any wireless problems.

Sorry it took awhile to respond, but.....

As far as a chance to upgrade to a newer modem now is not a good time.  However, when I do hopefully this year, I'll pay ya a visit and seek you council.

Regarding the time & date setting, yes I have it set to coordinate the time standard but the calendar still ends at 2012.

You are correct of the amount of wireless bonanza I have in my neighborhood was considering using a different channel would you recommend that?

Was having issues with the BB connecting and staying connected, but miraculously it appears to have straightened itself out and is working much better.

Thanks for your help Nutz!

You'll need to use InSSIDer application to see what channels are NOT being used and if you can find one or maybe one thats used however the signal is VERY weak, then yes, set a manual channel.

If your area has a lot of Wifi on 2.4Ghz and the channels are all used up, you may have to go to a 5Ghz radio solution.

Try to get in to a Motorola modem when you can.

The year date thing might be fixed if you can set up the NTP services under Tools/Time.

Keep us posted on how it goes. Hope it will keep working for you in mean time. Glad to be of help.
