Hi I encountered the same Problem. I'm not able to etablish aany connection to an FTP Server.
Could it be due to the @ in the username (which i can't remove on my hosted server) ?

I tried to solve this problem for about 6 hours today but couldn't figure out a solution.

My ftp server runs with unix, I'm using Safari (also tried Firefox)  with  Mac OS 10.8.3

More than likely.  You should have quit while you were ahead.
