After 2 years or so, my XM-2 fan bearings gave in. Still worked but the noise was unbearable. Ordered the Noctua NF-A4x10, but replacing was a bit of a challenge. It's slightly thicker, the mounting screws just barely made contact with the frame. Have to "stretch" the case a bit get fit back the metal frame with the new fan, and most important, the wires, the black and red wire, need to be switched (just like with the XM-2).

Unlike the XM-2, the Noctua NF-A4x10 works in the auto setting. When the DNS-320L boots up, the fan spins momentarily at the the start up sequence testing the fan setting, i.e., Set Fan-Control Mode to Auto ("Off/Low/High").

It's a very quiet fan for sure.

Hi there all. A bit radical I know, but I just removed the old fan completely, and fitted a Gelid Silent 8 (80x80mm) fan to the top of the NAS. The reason I did this, was temperature related rather than noise. I just thought that the NAS running at over 49c and both drives constantly over 45c was too much. After the mod the system temp never goes above 36c, and the drives (which are in continuous use) run at 35-36c. I had to reverse the polarity of the fan plug wires in order for the fan to work, and I run the fan at maximum - which is still much quieter than the original. Noise in general is not an issue for me as the NAS is in a temperature contolled cabinet (which sits at 25c) so I don't hear it at all.
Obviously, the NAS will not win any beauty contests, but I am convinced that I have added some longevity to both the unit itself and the hard drives.

Hi. Sure, I'll try and post some pics over the weekend. I mounted the fan on top of the unit, sucking air out. I removed the old fan and I placed some black duct tape over its inlet holes. I also used some black silicon to block the vent holes in the top cover; my intention being for the new fan to draw air from the bottom air holes all the way through past the disks and out through the top. It works great!

Ok. Here's some pics as promised. Like I mentioned previously, it's not going to win any beauty contests, but it does work really well in terms of cooling.

I see you are using the original fan header but reversed the wires on the plugs, and you say you're running it at max speed but do auto speed work? Thanks.

Yes, I'm running it at max speed, but it is much quieter than the original. The auto function didn't work when I tried it, but I didn't troubleshoot it as having the fan permanently on wasn't an issue for me, and I didn't want any more downtime.

According to online converters 28 CFM is 47.5 m3/h !!!

I also decided to replace the noisy fan yesterday. This is what I did:

• Cut a hole on the top cover
• remove original fan
• attach new fan on the top http://noctua.at/en/products/product-line-redux/nf-r8-redux-1200
• switch polarity on the fan's connector

The new fan has ultra low noise. Auto fan control works too. However, I set it to run "High" constantly. The new fan sucks air out of the chassis, so cold air flows in at the bottom/back (where the original fan was). When it is in idle, it is aorund 33/34 C degrees.

Hi I've replaced the old fan with the noctua and it is great.
however :
- the fan speed is not correct on the web interface.
- it has not resolved my problem with the temperature sensor even if the temperature is not > to 39°C (if i'm rebooting the nas cannot start and has a blue led blinking... I had to put it in the fridge to be able to get it work again)

any idea?

Possible that you might need a bigger fan. If the replaced fan isn't working well or right, there maybe possible irreparable damage as well. Might try mounting a large fan under the DNS. Something like a laptop cooler could work well.

ok but 39° is really not high no?

On the hairy edge of still be hot. 102F. Over time there will be some HW degradation due to the heat. If there has been interruptions in FAN and air flow and the unit has not operated correctly, other damage could also be a factor.

Does the DNS have ventilation slats on the bottom of the case?

the top of the nas has been taken away and I've put the 80mm FAN directly on the top of the HDDs.
