slow page load up and freezing
« on: May 03, 2009, 08:56:51 PM »

I purchased the D-link Wireless N Dir-615 router (revision C) I upgraded firmware and now it is 3.10. Each time I check my e-mail (only 1 PC connected and used with a wired connection) and I open up an e-mail it takes like 74 seconds to load and then it freezes and I am unable to open an e-mail (the page turns blank white).I try again and the same results appear. I switch back to my modem and the e-mail opens in a few seconds! Not only that freezes but other sites freeze too or take longer than usual to open up. I went back to my modem with only 1 pc until I can fix this router issue. What is the problem that I have freezing in sites and slow page load up? Also I lose some bandwidth when I go to the router, again only 1 pc connected and used with a wired connection.

I have another week to keep this router before I can return it back to the store.

Should I return this router and get one with a different revision?

I will be moving to a 2,215 1 Story home in a couple of weeks, can this d-link dir-615 cover it? I think it will but I am making sure.

By the way if I have to change my router, what router is good with Wireless N or better wireless but strong wired connections. I plan to be gaming on 2 pc's with a wired connection and to connect  2 gaming consoles wirelessly. Wireless N is alright for me. I have been trying to figure out the problem for 3 weeks!

If you know what the problem is
I really appreciate you for helping.

I have also experienced problems with my 615 (B2) and it might have been related to:

1) The 615 "limited" QoS engine.  There are not settings for this QoS engine.  It is either on or off.

2) ISP service problems.  At the time my 615 was slow, my ISP was having DNS server problems and I was experiencing "line" problems.  There is very little you can do on "line" problem beside complaining to the ISP customer service department.  As for DNS server problems, you can over-ride the default ones that your ISP "should" be providing.  Look at OpenDNS for starters. (Note:  you do not have to sign up for an OpenDNS user account.)

I doubt it is my ISP because I immediately switched back to my modem and the page load up quickly.

It is the router, I will get one with the A revision, if that does not work, I am getting the Dir-655.

But If there are certain settings I can fix then please tell me what it is,

thanks.

Who is your ISP btw?
What type of internet connection do you have (DSL or cable)?

Are you running any firewalls or anti-virus softwares?

As for your question about if this router can cover your house..
- That all depends on your environmet
- mirrors and walls will be a factor

If you're planning to use router for gaming I would go with any of the gigabit routers. DIR-655 should be fairly cheap now if you look around.

I am running DSL.

My ISP is AT&T and this is my connection information: (with modem only)

1536 Kbps (downstream)
384 Kbps (upstream)

I will upgrade back to the 3000 Kbps deal or the 6000 Kbps deal. Most likely the 3000 Kbps deal but I can get the 6000 if I want.

I am running Spyware Doctor, Webroot Desktop Firewall, and avast profesional 4.8 version.

That's the only firewall running and of course the router firewall is too.

Do you think I need gigabit ports or are 10/100 ports enough?

I will be moving to a 2,215 sq ft 1 story home soon like I said before and my wireless router might be on the opposite side of the house while the game consoles are on the other opposite side. The house is in a long floor plan like a rectangle. I was wondering if Wireless N will cover it.

I just want 2 pc's connected with a wired connection and 2 game consoles with a wireless connection.

Is wireless N good for that wireless connection I need?

Please reply back, because I have a few days before I can return this router back.

Appreciate for your help,
It is the  most valuable information I got after I researched after 3 weeks.

Thanks.

Ok because you're using DSL you will have to bridge you're modem. You will need to contact your ISP and ask them to bridge your modem. After your modem is bridged you should be able to get online.

Firewalls and anti-virus softwares can prevent you from getting on-line especially if you just added a new piece of hardware to your network such as the DIR-615. You may need to un-install the softwares temporarily. Disabling will not do the trick in most cases.

In the router try entering in a primary DNS and secondary DNS server and Disable DNS relay.

What is the model of DSL "modem" you have?

Does this DSL "unit" require a PPPoE "entry" on the PC (in software???)

My modem is Speedstream but again I am moving and I might change it.

It does require a PPPoE entry and I put that in the router.

I used network magic so I can manage my network and I added the router.

Should I just buy the 2wire AT&T gateway for $79.99?

It comes with 4 wired 10/100 ports and it has wireless too.

I heard it sometimes resets itself or something.

Do I have to bridge my modem so I can connect my router and get online? Because my router works, it just has slow page load up.
