Hi!

I have a DIR-655 B1 with FW 2.05.

I have different computers/phones connected to internet via the router, both via wifi and ethernet. I have Linux/Windows 7/Android and iOS units.

Two weeks ago one of my Windows 7 laptops did not connect to internet and I thought it was the computer. I did a lot of troubleshooting the computer, still did not work at home. When I brought the laptop to a friend it work directly. Now I started to think that it was the router that was the problem.
On the status page I can see that the machine got an IP address in the "LAN Computers" part. I can confirm in the laptop that it received the same IP address via DHCP.

I have look around in the menus but can not find anything that should make this computer not connect. I can not even login to the router via this computer.

Anyone that has any idea of how I can debug this?

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 is not being used.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Be sure to do a ipconfig /release in a command line box. Then do a ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /renew.
Be sure to update any wireless or wired adapter card drivers for the PC.


IF other devices are working with the router and the Windows 7 PC isn't, i would guess the problem is with the the PC.

Test the Laptops wired LAN connection as well.
Swap cables out between router and PC.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing

Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I have tried both wired and wireless with the same result.
I have not done a factory reset since all my other equipment works as expected.

I have a DSL modem connected to my ISP.
The DSL model is a DLink DSL-320B.
I checked the ISP MTU via the link provided. Ping worked well with 1472 so MTU is configured to 1500 which was the default value.

Traffic shaping is turned off.
I did not find the Advanced DNS Service.
I did not find Unicasting.
DNS Relay is enabled.
I have not reserved an IP address for all units and I don't want to do this. This will be done late in the debugging.
IPv6 is set to Link-local only.
Wish is disabled but WPS is enabled since that is how I connect some other devices.
WAN port speed is set to 10/100/1000 and I have devices that uses both 100 and 1000 today.
Time is right with ntp.

Maybe something
When I do a ipconfig /release and the ipconfig/renew I can see that I get two IP addresses. One for wireless and one for wired. Should I really get two?
I do have wifi enabled and the ethernet cable connected. I can also see in the Device Info on the router that the computer has received two IP addresses. This seems bad to me. Is this the problem and how do I solve this?

Since the computer works on a friends network via WiFi I guess that the laptop is pretty ok. Or?

If you have both Wireless and Wired connections going, then yes, the router will hand out 2 different IP addresses. It would be up to the Laptop and Windows on which one to use if both are connected. You need to test your Laptop with WiFi turn OFF and then make sure the LAN wired connection works. Then disable the LAN or disconnect the wire and turn ON the WiFi adapter then test.

I turned off wifi and kept the ethernet cable connected. I now have one IP address according to ipconfig. I still do not get an internet connection.
Now I can connect to the router! That is a step forward.
I still can not connect to any of the few sites I have tried outside. I can reach those sites from other units connected to the router.

Any more ideas?

Does WiFi work if LAN is disconnected?

Turn OFF ALL 3rd party security programs on the LT.

You might try a reboot into Safe Mode with Networking on the LT and see if this results in anything. Reboot the router as well during the LT reboot.

"I have not reserved an IP address for all units and I don't want to do this. This will be done late in the debugging." I recommend doing this NOW as it will help in troubleshooting and is highly recommended here.

Yes, wifi works when LAN was disconnected. One big step forward again. One of the things you mentioned in your first post must have helped. Thanks!

Now I wonder why LAN does not work. Shouldn't that be simpler? I have not rebooted into safe mode. I will do that soon.

Ok so we got WiFi going, LAN is either a bad cable, mis-configured IP address or conflict with a different device using same IP address, LAN adapter configuration is not right, or driver is hosed for the LAN adapter. Check LAN network settings to make sure it's set for Auto Obtain and not Static.
