DNS-320 for secondary backup
« on: March 29, 2013, 12:46:02 PM »

I am wanting to setup my drive so I use volume 1 for the family and setup volume 2 where it is never used except to periodically backup what is on volume_1.  It is to not be accessed.  My question is that has any users experienced problems where both drives have been lost doing it this way?  I know there a lot of oddities with the software/hardware and I would not have the ulitmate hardware scenario should a fire or theft occur (not offsite).

I originally bought a dual drive system for this type of backup; however, after reading all the negative posts about the unit, I am concerned about the integrity of what is on volume #2 using the sharecenter software to back it up.  Any watch-outs or advice?

Please carefully read the following sticky post: DNS-320 - Data Backup vs. Redundancy.

Reiterating some of the salient points in the above referenced sticky post, HDDs formatted as Standard Volumes are less vulnerable to data loss than a RAID configuration. Under ideal circumstances, source and backup data should be stored in different physical storage locations. Using a single DNS-320 configured as two non-RAID independent physical Volumes (although not the perfect solution) is the next best thing.

To add to JavaLawyer's post, the only things you have to be concerned about in that setup are drive failure - that can happen to anyone - and someone doing something stupid like deleting files that they shouldn't.
Other than that what you want to do is ideal for a small home network but I would add that any essential data should also be backed up to a removable drive just to be safe.

Thank you guys for the confirmation.  As a side question, is there a way to force the built-in backup tool in the NAS to do nightly backukps to Volume_2 and also setup rules to goto a drive plugged into the USB port?  I would imagine its possible via through a PC who can see both, but through the NAS side?

Seems like i researched this once before and the tool is only for things on the network or its own volumes, not the USB.  Not sure if firmware changed anything.

Nevermind, just found it on the firmware wish list, guess it has not changed.  Is there is a way let me know.
