Multiple Routers Issue
« on: April 02, 2013, 03:23:34 PM »

I got a new modem for my internet, a Motorola Surfboard. It has a router built in and I want to use it with my 825. The problem is my 825 was the main router for a long time, it gives all my devices IP addresses and stuff, but now the new model/router should be doing that.

So now I have this Surfboard, and it's the modem plus the main router, and I have things plugged into it working: xbox, front room pc, and cell phone. I have a good cable going to the 825 and that has my PC and my roommate's PC plugged into it; they both had intrawebs access before the modem change but now they can only access each other.

So what kind of settings do I need to.. um... set... to get my 825 to work with my new Surfboard?!?

Please help. My roommate graduated with a degree in networking or some such thing but he can't even figure this out... I wonder of the acreditation of his school... :)

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

I have two DIR-825 routers hooked up in series.  The primary router is a Rev. B1 and the secondary router is a Rev. A1.   I had to call tech support to figure out how to hook these up together.  According to the tech support people (and this worked for me) was to set up your primary router like normal.   You will have to change the TCIP address of your secondary router (in your case this is the DIR-825) so that it is not the same as your primary router.  You need to go into manual setup to do this.
You need to connect the ethernet cable from the LAN port of the primary router to the LAN port of the secondary router (not the WAN port).  Tech support insisted that I make sure to connect to the same # LAN port on both routers (example: Lan port #1 on primary router to LAN port #1 on the secondary router).  It was not obvious to me why it had to go to the same LAN port # on both routers, but their procedure worked.

After you got the cable connections correct and you made sure that the TCIP addresses were not the same for both routers, then you need to go through a manual setup of your secondary router again to make sure your DMZ is off on the secondary router and all configurations are correct.

Hopefully this will work for you.

Good luck with your problem.   When in doubt, call tech support.   Be prepared to wait a LOOOONG time.  It was worth it to me.

The OP only needs to get the modem bridged or use DMZ, simple configuration here. Shouldn't have to call in to CS or wait forever on the phone.  ;)

So I was not able to change the ip address of my DIR-825, I kept getting an error about it not matching with WAN or something. Instead I changed the IP address of my modem/router so it is different than the 825. Good news! I get interwebs on my computer now. Bad news... I can't access the modem/router from my computer now.

I have internet access but there is still something blocking me: I can see all the devices on the network starting from the 825, but everything connected to the modem/router I can not see.

Just in case there is any confusion:

                                            >>> Other devices
                                            |
Modem/router >>>>>>  DIR-825 >>>> My PC
                    |
                    >>> other devices

On my PC I can see everything connected to the 825 but nothing before it.

Any suggestions? They are appreciated.

Try this for the 2nd router:
Turning a router into an AP.

I will consider that but it's not something I want to do if there is another fix.

Anyone else have any more suggestions?

Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works.
