Special Trick to Setup??
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:39:43 PM »

Hello all.  I just purchased this and wanted to use it as a Bridge to give some wired components wireless access to my wireless network.  I thought setup would be easy, but it seems it's not.  I've tried both the Wizard and doing things manually and both times it sees my network, I put in all proper settings, and I think all is good to go.  But as soon as I try to test, it never connects to my wireless network.  What gives?  Is there some special or hidden option I'm missing to make this work?  I've wasted a few hours trying to get it to work and am quite frustrated.  I've had other APs and whatnot before which have all worked fine, so I don't understand what the problem is.  Thanks for your help.

Is you wireless SSID hidden?

For the DAP-1522 to connect, you have to unhide your wireless SSID.

Would need more detail on what you've done and what you're trying to achieve.
Things such as f/w installed and settings being used would help.

I originally had my SSID hidden, but either way, it still found my wireless router via Site Survey and as thus, had the correct SSID configured so even if I still had the SSID hidden, it still should connect.  I have the latest firmware on it (1.20 I believe) and like I said, I want it to be a bridge for a few electronic devices to connect to it via wired while it connects to my wireless network (thus giving my devices internet access).  I followed the instructions to a 'T' and even tried doing it manually (either way, the configuration comes out the same) and it still doesn't work.  Here's the basic steps I took:

1.) Switched unit to Bridge.
2.) Plugged in power so it was on and waited a bit for it to fully boot up.
3.) Changed my PC's IP to be in the same subnet (like 192.168.0.40) and connected it directly to the device (thus losing my own network/internet connectivity).
4.) Logged into the device and did the configuration (it has my correct SSID, Security settings and Key, I made sure to include the MAC address in my router's Allow list, etc.).
5.) Device says it's ready to go and can see my wireless network fine (at least through Site Survey) and all settings when checked over manually look good.
6.) I disconnect power from device.
7.) I return my PC's IP and such to be DHCP again (back to normal).
8.) I plug the power back into the unit.
9.) I wait a while for it to find the wireless network and hopefully give my still connected PC it's network/internet access.
10.) Nothing happens though... Bridge LED light is blinking (annoying) but no connectivity and I can't login to the device anymore.
11.) I check DHCP client list on my router, device isn't listed, thus I'm assuming it's not connecting at all.

That's basically it.  I've also tried giving the device a Static IP and tried actually moving it to the location that I want it to see if it magically works, but it doesn't.  So, any further suggestions with that info?  Am I missing a setting or doing something out of order maybe?  Thanks.

What router are you connecting to?
In the DAP-1522 did you enter in a gateway? (gateway being the ip address of the router)

If you're connecting to a dlink router the ip should be 192.168.0.1

btw I noticed your banner.. you play L4D?

@Ru-Fi-Oh
It's a Belkin N+ Wireless N router, which has always worked great.  And yes, I entered a Gateway when I did a Static IP (which for me was in the 192.168.1.xxx subnet, so Gateway was 192.168.1.1).  DHCP I didn't of course.

And yes, I play L4D a lot (when I can), one of my fav games currently.  :)

@Fatman
lol  Yes, I'm a gamer, but I also just setup a very nice home theater system setup and wanted to get a couple wired components access to the internet wirelessly, hence asking for help here.  ;)

Ok so please verify that your DAP-1522 is sitting on a 192.168.1.X address instead of 192.168.0.X

By default the DAP-1522 is 192.168.0.50 you should change it to 192.168.1.50 (If that address isn't already taken). and a gateway of the router 192.168.1.1

If the bridge is still connected wirelessy you should be able to ping both the router and the dap-1522.

Also you said the SSID was hidden. Try to connect to the SSID when it is not hidden and tell us if you still experience the same issue.

I did something similar during one of my tries to get it working and it didn't seem to make any difference, but I will try again and let you know.  I'll also double check that my SSID is being broadcast again.

Thanks.

And off-topic, but maybe it's just me, but every time I see/read your name, Ru-Fi-Oh, I always think of the movie Hook...  ;)

Oh no, he is on to us guys.  I just wish I could show you a side by side of Ru-Fi-Oh and Rufio, suffice it to say it is a little amusing.  Maybe for Halloween we can get him to put in some hair dye, what do you say Ru-Fi-Oh?

Your a gamer too, small world?  How do you feel about 4E, the edition that has killed not one but two founders so far?

I wonder how long till I get kicked off this thread?

Haha yes.. it is a name I inherited ever since I started working here. My colleagues want me to dress up as Ruifo for Halloween.. but tights aren't really my thing  :-\ I think it would be more awesome if L4Dlink team dress up as the characters from L4D on Halloween. I call Hunter or maybe Smoker?

Maybe we should start this topic in an L4D board so we don't get off topic.

Off Topic....What does that mean again.

Bedside I don't feel like portraying any more stereotypes than necessary, given the screen name Fatman I don't like this idea, I will not dress up as a boomer.

I've tried your suggestions, but nothing worked.  I got the IP to the correct subnet (192.168.1.50) and all settings are correct.  Yet it still doesn't connect to my wireless router.  I have no idea why as everything is correct.  I've tried rebooting it via the GUI, manually rebooting it by unplugging and plugging back in, and nothing.  I'm about to give up completely and try to return it maybe as it seems hopeless.  Maybe there's something weird with my network setup?  I doubt it though, as everything else I have works just fine wirelessly...  :*(

Are you using MAC filters in the router ?
Then you have to allow the wireless MAC of the Bridge and of each client connected to the bridge.
