For anyone else reading, he added a manual uplink speed of 2Mbps in the router settings, disabled HT20/40Mhz Coexistence, and changed to n-only mode with WPA2 and AES (which now magically works with my WD Live box; previously it didn't).
Also, we changed a property called "802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4" in my laptops adaptor's advanced configuration settings from "20 MHz only" to "Auto" which has improved its performance, and may have somehow been affecting the rest of the network.
Anyway, I'll monitor my connections and we'll see if the problem is solved!
