I can't thank you enough for your help FurryNutz

For anyone else reading, he added a manual uplink speed of 2Mbps in the router settings, disabled HT20/40Mhz Coexistence, and changed to n-only mode with WPA2 and AES (which now magically works with my WD Live box; previously it didn't).
Also, we changed a property called "802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4" in my laptops adaptor's advanced configuration settings from "20 MHz only" to "Auto" which has improved its performance, and may have somehow been affecting the rest of the network.

Anyway, I'll monitor my connections and we'll see if the problem is solved!

I hate to say it, but I've been having more connectivity issues
The problem seems to be a bit different now though.
I'll be connected to the internet with no problems, when suddenly I will be disconnected. I can reconnect to the network, but there is no internet access (or it will say "Limited Access"), and it says I am connected to an "Unknown Network". When I ran the Windows troubleshooter on one occasion it eventually told me "Unknown Network does not have a valid IP configuration". The problem persists until I unplug the router and plug it back in.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Also ensure that if your using a Cable ISP service, that the cable line condition is good going into the ISP modem. Have the ISP check this physically. Have them ensure the Signal going to the ISP modem is to spec. Have then test from your location, not theres. If there is any TV line splitters on the cable line, remove them as they can lower the signal and introduce noise on the line. Dedicated Cable Internet line is preferred. If your on DSL, ensure the phone lines are in good working condition and set up well and filtered.

I have Cable.
Modem is RCA DHG525. It doesn't have a built in router.

I'll have to call my ISP then and see if it's anything on their end. (They'll definitely say no :p)

The one main reason external routers exhibit this would be a loss of signal or ISP modem connection or router is not getting data flow from the ISP modem.

I also recommend asking your ISP for a newer or updated ISP modem. Sure is hard to find good details about your current model and I believe it's somewhat old, est 3 years. If your ISP supports you having your own ISP modem, I recommend buying a Motorola SB 6121 or 6141.

Also check cables between the ISP modem and router. Use CAT6 cabling.
