If Volume_1 and Volume2 are configured in RAID 1 (i.e. mirror), can Volume_1 be removed and installed in another DNS343 as a single disk without reformatting or losing data?

In other words, does the DNS format an individual HDD any differently than HDDs used in RAID1?

Yes the formats are different. If you move it to another DNS-343 it will show as a degraded raid until it is formatted back to Standard.
