No printer scanning on SharePort
« on: May 07, 2013, 08:56:12 AM »

I have a Brother MFC printer and a new DIR 655 router. Tried SharePort with the factory firmware and printing works fine on both computers. Scanning doesn't work at all on either computer though. All I get is a "Cannot find Brother printer...". It's funny, because I get this message when I use the printer software to scan and I get the same message when I push the button on the printer to make it scan so obviously there's some printer to PC communication going on here.

I just finished updating the router firmware to the latest 2.10NA version. Just updated SharePort to 4.1.1. Any ideas?

One of the main reasons I bought this router is so I could use the printer's scanner on both computers via the USB Shareport.

The scanning function of the printer may not support the use of a 2ndary connection such as Shareport and using the USB port on the back of a router, rather it would need a more directly connection to the printer for any scanning function to work. I recommend you contact the Mfr of the printer and scanner to see what is supported. I don't believe scanning is supported here.

Well that's no fun. The printer can't scan over a network connection either.

I presume the printer connection is only USB?
If so they do have USB to LAN interface adapters that could help resolve this however again, Not sure if the communication of your drivers for this printer are dependent upon a direct USB connection. You'll need to get with the Mfr of this printer to see what they support and what can be done.

No, there is a USB and Ethernet port on it.

It says in the manual it requires a direct USB connection to scan.

I presumed that the Shareport would have been considered a "Direct USB connection".

If it's got Ethernet, Please use that as your connection. This will eliminate the need of using USB and shareport and you should be able to install the Mfr's SW and drivers on each PC and connection to the IP address the printer gets from the router. Ethernet is always preferred.

Please start reading my posts how about?

This is the second time you've read the first sentence and then totally missed the rest.

The information you presented has been read. And I replied accordingly. Since there maybe an issue with USB and scanning, and this printer has Ethernet abilities which you said it has in your 3rd reply, it's recommended to set up the printer using the LAN port available on the printer and then set up the drivers and scanning software on each PC that should be able to connect to the IP address of the printer. This should resolve the scan connection problem. Please refer to the printers Mfr support site and help to set this up.

Good luck.
