New firmware version 1.36 for rev A DIR-655?
« on: May 15, 2013, 02:42:57 AM »

My router is telling me:
Newer Firmware Version 1.36 for your D-Link Systems DIR-655 router is now available at http://wrpd.dlink.com.tw/router/firmware/DIR-655/Ax/NA/DIR655A4_FW136NAB02.bin

I can download the file, but there are no release notes and there are no references to this new version on the D-Link support site. Anyone know what the deal is with this new version?

I got brave or perhaps stupid and loaded in the new 1.36NA firmware.  So far I haven't had any adverse effects and I don't notice anything different.  Please be aware that if you do install it, it will set you back to the factory setting, so be sure to save your config before you do the firmware update.  I'll let you know if I notice any changes for the good or the bad in the future.

has anyone found out if this is legitimate? the support web site still shows 1.35NA.

the router says this is available

Latest Firmware Version : 1.36NA

Latest Firmware Date : 2012-3-19

the date has the 1.36NA over a year old, yet the router flags this today, and support has no mention of firmware over a year old.

I'm suspicious something is not right.

It hasn't been posted as of yet. One user has updated his router and mentioned that it works and nothing noticed about it.

I recommend, that until further information is released by D-Link, do not update to it if your router is currently working with out problems. If it works, don't fix it!. Unless you want to. Up to you.

I received the email for notification of firmware update, and quickly downloaded the firmware upgrade file:  DIR655A4_FW136NAB02.bin

Like vega (above), I upgraded my DIR-655 wireless router. I was formerly on firmware 1.35NA and am now on 1.36NA
My firmware date is also 2012-3-19

After the upgrade all personalization was lost so I restored my previous settings.
FYI: the default admin password was blank - no password required.

I just checked again (May 18, 2013) and there are no release notes.

Without any baseline measures, it seems more responsive.  I have had performance problems off and on since I got it two years ago.  Could be I didn't power cycle often enough, but it seems okay right now.
I went through all the pages looking for features or functions, but right now everything seems the same.

If I start to see problems I will be sure to check back in.

Hmm. Be careful, I upgraded my (Rev A4 DIR655) router to the corresponding 1.36EU firmware and ran into an insurmountable "ap should not be locked before configuring" on trying to configure *any* setting after installing the new firmware from factory fresh reset state (even through the quick setup "wizards").

I Tried everything I could, except restoring my previous settings, as unfortunately I didn't save these in a file before starting the original upgrade.

I eventually gave up and restored the 1.35EU firmware, and the problem disappeared (e.g. could save settings, could use wizard.)  Then I reapplied the 1.36 firmware and the problem reappeared.  The one thing I've not yet tried is to save the settings from a fully configured 1.35 router, then apply the 1.36 firmware, then restore the settings en-masse.  I have a suspicion this may work by putting the router into a state where further configuration would be possible by not having the above validation check trigger anymore due to presumably also restoring the password as well.  Anyway, just a warning to anyone wanting to install this firmware.

Did you do a factory reset before updating the FW then one more factory reset after the update tjen configure from scratch using IE browser for this evolution?

Hi all,

same Problem here! I got a message, that a newer firmware version is available and I downloaded and installed DIR655A4_FW136EUB01.bin on my DIR-655 Hardware A4.

After installation with success message, I wasn't able to change any Network settings of the router  because of the same message, wprins described earlier: "AP should not be locked before configuring". There seems to be no setting to avoid this message. Searching this message text via smartphone brought me to this forum.

I did not make a factory reset before, but the router reported a successful update and he also let me in. After the update and the mess with the described problem, I did a factory reset, but this brought nothing.
So I changed the firmware back to 1.34EU like it was before. Now all is OK again.

Until now, with 1.34EU I had the problem, that the Router sometimes refused to reconnect to a DNS Server, after he had lost the connection one time. I originally hoped, that the newer firmware could fix this. But this was a flop. The pity is, that If I don`t want to get a EMail daily about the new not-working 1.36, I will have to turn off the Notification.

Since you downgraded to v1.34EU, You could attempt another try at v1.36EU using the following process to see if you can get v1.36EU to install correct and function:
FW Update Process

People have been reporting it's been installed and working for them.

Strange...While it can't be found anywhere else I have looked, suddenly the latest firmware using Tools - Firmware - Check Now is 1.36NA - 2012/03/19.  So it being over a year after the fact, it must be well battle-tested, right? :D So I immediately installed it even though have had no problems whatsoever with 1.35NA.

Since the last couple of firmware updates reset the settings, I saved a config file first.  Then I simply installed the new firmware successfully, and restored the config file successfully.  I haven't found a single thing different in the UI, and things seem to be working as good as before.

Would still like to know what has been changed.  ???

I have also updated, and restored settings from disc, works fine..

When i from the tools menu on the router checked for firmware upgrade, it stated I had the latest, so I presume this version is somehow approwed by D-Link.. otherwise I'd recon that it stated that the previous version was available.

Yes.  Well, I can't put my hand on my heart I did exactly that, but I did several flashes and numerous resets, using several browsers (including IE).  I might try again just to confirm.  But really, even if there's some magic way of making this work, it shouldn't be this hard.  The steps I followed should work, really.  There's nothing special about this upgrade, and the exact same steps work with other versions of the firmware, which to me suggests and issue with the 1.36 release, even if there's some magic incantation by which one can make it work... :(
