Hi. The DNS-320 is working great but the thing is the fan is always on, even if I disconnect it from the network! It's so loud even on quiet and so much louder on High! I have seen alot of dust in the fans and I have already cleared that up using a teardown method. I looked on Amazon and found these

Also when I connect an ethernet cable from my laptop directly into the nas.... How do I access it? It seems like a stupid question to me... :

I can't say much about your first question regarding fans, we have only replaced one and that was because it stopped working - we took the easy way out and used a spare 5v fan for a notebook that we had in spare parts.

To answer your second question a lot will depend on what operating system you are using and if your laptop also has WiFi and so gets its IP address from a DHCP server somewhere on the network.

If it is the second case and the address is in the 192.168.0.xxx range then all you have to do is open your browser and type http://192.168.0.32 and you should get the login screen.  If that doesn't work let us know what OS you are using and how the laptop gets it IP.

Hi, thanks for replying. So about the fan. was the fan the same dimensions as the previous one? I am looking into this

The fan is very noisy and the fan is going to be on 24/7.  If anyone else could help, that would be great!

If memory serves the fan we used was a few mm larger overall but the screws fitted, the thickness was the same.

As I type this I have four DNS-320 less than a metre from me working on backing up our servers.  I know they are working because the disk LEDs are flickering and I heard the disks spin up some time ago.  I'm not saying that you are wrong about fan noise, you are just unlucky and have a 'lemon'.

I don't see why the fan you are looking at shouldn't work, just be careful when you wire it up.  Also that fan is no where as expensive as the one we used but when the client wants the unit fixed 'yesterday' as opposed to cheaply you use what is to hand.
