DIR-615 as wireless access point
« on: June 17, 2013, 03:03:57 PM »

Hi

After struggling to overcome all the little quirks and issues when using the DIR-615 as a router and wireless access point, I decided to try using it just as a Wireless access point. To that end I followed the manual in setting it up to connect to another router. I then plugged it into my switch via a regular LAN port, not the internet port.

When testing it out, I can ping my internal network but when I try to ping the outside world from the dlink...I get a Unkown Host response. To me this means the dlink has no dns information.

Can someone please tell me how to get this working right.
How does the Dlink get it's dns information when it is just being used as a wireless access point?

Ensure you follow this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Works well.

Hi Fuzzy! I am sure you don't remember me from our April posts. I have been using the Dlink as a router/wireless access point, but got frustrated by still getting those disconnects I mentioned.

The guide you pointed me to is the one I used.
I don't quite understand how the dlink gets it's dns information. Since we have the wan stuff not being used, and the dhcp stuff turned off. and we assign a LAN address (I used 192.168.0.50) but I don't see where the DNS info comes from.
I can log into the dlink using the above address. I have double checked all  the setting in the guide.

The unknown host smells of no dns services.
Thanks

The only items needed on the 615 in AP mode is the IP address and Sub Net Mask.
Ensure DNS Relay is disabled.

When in AP mode the DNS will pass thru the 615 and does not need to be configured on the 615. It should come from the main host router.

Thanks for the reply.

I was using the dlink as router/wireless access point.

I moved back to using my linux box as router/firewall. It performs flawlessly as a router, and hands out ip's and dns addresses to any pc that is hooked to it. It has worked for over 10 years now. I only retired it because I wanted to do streaming internet wirelessly, and installed the dlink.

The dlink is the only device that does not seem to get dns info.

I guess I will just have to not use it, and find a better way of doing things.

I thank you for all your help.
Sincerely

It should work well as a wired AP. I use a DGL-4500 and a DIR-601 for wired APs. Work great.

I think the 615 could be mis-configured is all.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Thank you for the kind reply.
I would be grateful if you had the time to do that.
I can install that software on a windows XP or my Ubuntu 12.04 box.

I have again retired my linux router/firewall box and my current setup is:
cox cable modem ---> cisco linksys WRT54GS2 which is now my router and wireless access point. ---> 3 ports hooked to my pc's 1 port open. The Roku player is wireless connected to the Cisco. I could attach the Dlink to the open port on the Cisco to make it available.

Curently the Cisco is performing quite well, however it also has a session idle time out. Also, because the antenna are internal, I don't believe it will have the range that the Dlink had (it was quite good and extended quite a ways away from the house).

My complaints about the Dlink as a router are that it reboots itself, droppiing all connections, wireless and wired. The power light goes to yellow, all the link lights go out...it then restarts itself. The router should NEVER drop a wired connection, even if the wireless part wants to play nice. I could live with the session idle issues but not the disconnects for no reason and not infrequently.

I did try and use it as just an Wireless AP with my linux firewall box, but the above issue just drove me nuts. I have not yet tried it with the Cisco, by turning off the Cisco wireless part and using the Dlink for that.

Please let me know if you want to take a look at the Dlink configured as a Wireless AP only. I am sure we could set up a time and date for that.

Thank you

I would presume that if the 615 was giving you those issue would be related to your environment and or a mis-configuration. Would need to troubleshoot that later.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Send me a PM with a time frame of when you'd like to connect with ID and PW.

I have the DIR-615 as a WAP only, connected to a Cisco Linksys WRT54GS2 which is acting as the router, and also as another WAP at the moment. Everything seems to be working fine so far. I will disable the Cisco wireless once I am satisfied there are no disconnects on the DIR-615.

I will try and solve the issue of the DIR-615 working with my old linux box later.

I would like to thank FurryNutz for helping me, your generous gift of time is both rare and much appreciated!
Thank you!
