Hi

I've got an internet router/modem to connect to the outside world provided by the isp, and now I bought a second router DIR-657 to enhance my network. I can get the network and internet work alright, SharePort recognizes the connected usb-drive, but won't let me map or open the drive, I can't even see what's on it, nor write to it. Can You help me? I've got Windows 8 on a rather new machine. Firmware is 1.02 (beta), but the same problem was on 1.01.

What version of SP are you using?
Any chance you can test with a different version of Windows to see?

SP version is 4.1.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver: 3.4.6.0), No, I haven't got an opportunity to use a different Windows machine. I have read the FAQ. My machine refers to the drive with the name usb(A1). So when I try to map to \\192.168.0.1\usb(A1), it fails. Nor does it work with the name I gave to the drive (Uxi), like \192.168.0.1\Uxi.

The error message Windows gives me is 'cannot connect to the network', and closer inspection of the message tells that 'The device or resource (192.168.0.1) is not set up to accept connections on port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)".' Well I have enabled every sharing option there is in Windows 8, even enabled NetBIOS.

And btw, the drive is formatted with ntfs, and I can see the Media Server (empty) folders, but I haven't got an idea how to get anything in them.

And I'm connected with a wire to the router, and we are in the same network, the D-link router is also a DHCP server,

router ip:             192.168.0.1
Windows machine: 192.168.0.2

Now I got a possibility to use Windows 7 to test the installation, and, Hallelujah, it worked! Although I had to manually map the drive, I can read and write from/to it. Which doesn't solve the problem on Windows 8

Btw, doesn't this device support SharePort Mobile?!?

Well, that's not a problem, while I can map the drive with ES File Explorer in my Android device. That was the main point in buying this device in the first place. So WLAN is working as well! Hooray!

And finally got it working in Windows 8. Due to some disabled services, the mapping didn't succeed. So I'll have to blame myself for my troubles.

Ok, I noticed that NetBIOS is crucial!

Btw, SharePort mapping is also working, but do we need the utility after all. Is it just a mapping helper?

Could somebody tell me what what the DLNA server (Media Server) is trying to? It tries to open a pge at port 8200, but nothing comes up. And how do I manage access to the drive?

Good to hear and glad you got it working in both Windows versions.

Would you be willing to give some step by step detailed instructions on how you got it working in Windows 8 so any future users will get it working for them?

I think the DLNA is just an option that if you enabled it, anything connected on the USB port loaded with video files and video data can be used by other DLNA supported devices, like streamers and TVs. Theres not UI or anything that needs to be configured on it. It's just either ON or OFF.

Well, Windows 8 installation doesn't differ so much from Windows 7 or earlier installations, only that the DVD doesn't work. I downloaded the SharePort software from D-link's site and installed it. And if you haven't messed with the services like I had, it should be working as such. Microsoft Networking, and therefore NetBIOS, should be enabled as the mapping uses those.

As a matter of fact, I think that you don't need the SharePort at all. But without it I wouldn't have known that the device is called usb(A1), usb(B1) or such. If you don't remember to disconnect the mapping before attaching a different drive to the router, then it names the new device to B1 etc.

So, just mapping \\<device ip>\usb(A1) should be enough (or \\192.168.0.1\usb(A1) if you haven't changed the default ip).

Btw, would anybody know whether you could connect many usb devices to the usb port?

Ya, not sure about connecting many devices to the USB port using a USB HUB. I think it could be possible however not sure if enabling the devices all at ones at the same time would work.
