How do a I stream movies outside my LAN?
« on: July 18, 2013, 03:28:32 AM »

Hi!

I can access my NAS from outside my LAN (both Axajplorer and web file server) but I can't seem to find a way to stream movies. I can only download the files which is somewhat time consuming to say the least...

Ajaxplorer too crappy?

Do you have the necessary speed on your internet connection?

OK, the other thing I should have asked was do you have the necessary ports open on your router?  Don't ask me what they are because I don't know off the top of my head and I think it depends on settings in the media streaming program (I don't know because we don't use media streaming and neither does any of our clients).

Edit:  I just spoke to one of my service guys and he said you need a media streaming server to work outside the internal lan.

My problem is that there is no "play" or "stream" option when viewing files in the "web file server" or ajaxplorer interface. I can only download them from there.

So again, how do I stream them?

I don't know if this will help but when we do training sessions at a clients and want to show some of the videos we have made we use VLC to get and show them over the internet.  I assume you should be able to do the same with the windows version of VLC.  We don't use windows so I can't be sure about that, sorry.

The settings should be in streaming -> http when you select all settings in the tools -> preferences.

With 1MB upload line (max upload speed: 100kb/s), I guess I can't stream movies outside of my LAN ^^

Hi,

To read in streaming a media file (video or music), you just have to open this file directly with VLC or WMV (or any viewer compatible with streaming). The extension must be recognized by the viewer and that's all.
You have to use the "file open" function or type directly te URL of the file in the viewer.
That works on your DNS or in any HTPP server.

The upload speed has no influence on opening the streaming, only on the performances of the streaming. If the throughput is too low, you should decrease the quality of the video in your video.

And of course, if your viewer can't gain access to the URL of the file, no streaming and maybe a cause in the router configuration.

Bye
