Given current world news , I now have more of a desire to keep my private emails and business data transfers , private . Not that my information is in need of total security but it is private and I wish to keep it that way . Also if I am out of the country it is nice to have an encrypted tunnel to my business and home here in the states.
In answer to your question on whether the home router is only good on the VPN , the simple answer is no , its has all the same functions as a commercial router even WiFi using dd-wrt pro for $20. , this also gives you support for dual layer CPUs . The homemade router should be WiFi compatible with any other router in your system but I have yet to prove that , so far I can only find testing on the VPN and plugging a commercial router and the rest of your network , into the new one .
I am also reading that Open-VPN has fixed the 10 Mbs restriction in windows .
MOBOs with sata capabilities , and VIA chipsets so far are not compatable with DD-WRT . Also DD-WRT is faster that OPEN- VPN . AMD and Atom solutions work the best , the Athlon II most successful , Intel chip sets good also , just a few of my notes ...
I dont want to overstep Forum rules so my recommendation is that if you have interest in this kind of project , you google Open-VPN , dd-wrt , m0n0wall mod and the VPN forums for further information . Youtube also has some videos on this subject .
I would love to buy a DLink router to the job but I fear the cost would be more than my research budget would allow , I am hearing prices of $800 for 480M CPU router , and I dont know if that is fast enough .
Be sure to do your homework , I am an experienced Automation Engineer , and used to working on computers at the machine level , and realize anytime you put projects together from multiple sources you are going to run into compatibility issues , that can make your life miserable . Doing your homework can eliminate a lot of those issues , already suffered and solved by others .
I would still like to have some input from DLink on this matter , as a commercial built product already has most of the bugs worked out , and would make my life much easier .
