frequent internet drop off

Hello there,

I bought a DIR 615 recently to replace my old DIR 601. I didn't feel internet speed or wireless coverage obvious improvement as I expected. Another problem is now I have frequent internet drop off, especially in the evening, about 2-3 times every night. Most of the time it will reconnect automatically, a few I'll have to power off and on router. I use Acanac cable internet with 25MGPS unlimited. I have a desktop PC wired after router and 3 laptops using wireless. Other wireless includes iTalk TV and cellphones, but most won't be used at the same time. We don't play computer games, neither movie fans, so I think the usage is not that heavy. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.


Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.


3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.


Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection


I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

I live in scarborough, M1J2L7.
I haven't try factory reset.
I have a new Huawei MT 130U cable modem bought directly from Acanac, which is my internet provider and configulated.
Thank you so much for your detailed instruction. An outsider like me can modify settings for a router, feel really cool. I did exactly as told but there are several things I couldn't find on my router. such as: no Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP selection in Firewall settings;  no WISH, and WPS in Advanced networking.
The WAN port speed in Auto 10/100mbps.
I choose NTP server: ntp1.dlink.com.
Because I am not sure the wireless mode for all my devices, so I choose mixed 802.11 n and g.
channel width: auto 20/40 mhz.
I couldn't figure out how to set a manual Channel to an open or unused channel, not such item.
I mainly use firefox.
Could you please tell me how to check signal levels going to the ISP modem? I also wonder whether the internet provider's cable speed be lower than expected. My cable connects directly from outside to my modem, then router. I don't have TV spliter, it is wireless iTalk TV.
It is 11pm right now and I did most as you told me after dinner. So far we had once internet drop off. Will update tomorrow because my daughter will keep using computer for a while, to see whether it will drop again.

Try a factory reset at some point when you have time.

Are you in the North American or EU region?

Unfortunately there were two more drop offs last night before my daughter sleep.
I gonna try a factory reset and download InSSIDer today.
I'll google how to check signal level to my ISP modem. Will update later.

You'll need to contact your ISP and have them help you check signal levels.
