Author Topic: DIR-655 drops Internet - at same time can't connect to router admin page  (Read 27455 times)

Hi Guys - new to the forum.
Over the last week my router has been losing its internet connection numerous times per day, but also when I try to check the settings, I can't connect to the standard admin login page and router does not respond to ping of its IP address.  The local network is fine - I can see the other devices on the network - wireless and wired. This leads me to think it's a router problem, not an ISP problem (Bell Sympatico).

I can usually restore the connection after some time by powering down and back on - sometimes it takes more than one try.  I use Network Magic Pro 5.1 to manage my network - sometimes the Restore Connection utility will work, sometimes not so I have to do the power down thing.
I am still running the original firmware (I have A2 version and I think 1.02 firmware).  I am a bit nervous of upgrading firmware since I have no other issues until this one, and I see lots of threads from people who had problems after upgrading.

Any ideas/suggestions?  Any comment is appreciated.

Thanks

PS I did notice that the unit feels hot underneath, not so much on top - is there a heat issue with these units?  I have had it for about 2 yrs. now and you would think such a problem would have surfaced before. Anyway, I've raised it up so air can flow under just in case.

This issue happens from time to time.  A good suggestion is to try the following:

1)  Make a backup of your router's configuration Tools -> System -> Save to Local Hard Drive
2)  Write down any settings you have changed from default (in case the config is bad)
3)  Reset your router to default by holding down the reset button for ~30 seconds / 2 complete reboots
4)  Log into the router (http://192.168.0.1) and perform *ONLY* the Internet Connection Setup Wizard
5)  Connect your wireless clients to "DLINK"

Test it out overnight and see if it still works in the morning.  If so, the error was with your config:

1)  Manually make the changes to your router at this point
2)  Set the Wireless SSID & Encryption Options
3)  Turn on anything else you have written down
4)  Don't forget any port forwarding / virtual servers / schedules / rules / DHCP reservation, etc

If it didn't work and DSL still keeps dropping, then restore the config you saved:

1)  Log in and go to Tools -> System -> Load From Local Hard drive
2)  Reboot the 655
3)  Contact support or keep searching the forums

Let us know your results.

I have this problem recently as well.
It has only started occurring after updating to 1.31 (why did I do that?)

I have Comcast cable for my internet, and my router has been rock solid for over a year, maybe 3 reboots in that time.
I have had to reboot twice in the past 3 days now, and it is worrying me.
I don't believe it is a configuration issue since it has been fine until the update, but I will give the above a shot I suppose and report back in a couple of days.

Same problem here. Was on 1.11 and had not rebooted in over 90 days.  Went to 1.31 and have lost internet 3 times in the last week.  The router admin page is not reachable, and new connections cannot be initiated.

One interesting thing though is I maintain several IPSec VPN connections to my office, and generally those connections will continue to function, when nothing else will.

Thanks for the info. ttmcmurry.  I'll give this a try. I assume step 4 must be completed with a wired connection?

I have this problem as well after upgrading.

It feels like once a day (but in probably actualy once every 2 or 3 days) I lose my connection.

I am using a wired connection, though, with wireless disabled.

Usually unpluging the router for a few seconds does the trick to reestablish my connection.

I have done the hard reset as well.

I think this is the same problem as here:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5281.60

The latest possible workaround is to disable DNS relay.

Not really, just connect to SSID DLink instead.

Hey guys, I was about to return my router today because of this problem when I saw this thread. I also upgraded to 1.31, and have been having the same problems. Once a day or so the internet just dies. But not in a sudden way, it's hard to explain but web pages just start loading slower and slower until finally nothing loads and I can't get to the router configuration page. Usually, simply restarting the router fixes everything, but it is a giant PITA to have to do this every day. Has anyone tried the DNS Relay fix successfully? And if not is there a way to downgrade the firmware (I know it says you can't, but it also doesn't say that one of the features of the new firmware is less time on the internet  ;)

I haven't experienced any of these symptoms (A2 hardware), I have DNS relay and Advanced DNS enabled. Is it really the router or might this be a problem with the cooperation with your modem (internet gateway) that's causing this? I mean, rebooting the router also causes the connection with the modem to be reset....So have you looked at the modem logs also (you might want to configure it a bit to show the relevant log files though. By default they probably don't log anything)?

But there is really, absolutely, totally no way to downgrade.

Usually, I would consider the modem being the problem, however, the router worked fine without the 1.31 firmware upgrade, and right now I have my old DI-524 plugged in and it has been working for 2 days now without any connection issues.

I did one better and just bought a different router.  I am working at home today and haven't been disconnected from my remote desktop once although my wireless signal went from 97% to 93%.  I have turned the 655 into a G access point for my roommates and my iphone.  Hopefully it holds up as that.  Would still like to see a new firmware though.

I bought the 655 last july I think.  it had been going well for so long.  Its too bad the firmware hasn't been able to stay stable past 1.11.

Another interested thing, using the 655 took a speedtest twice at speekeasy and got 16Mbps both times.  Then unplugged the 655 and went to the new router and got 28Mbps on both runs.  Granted, I haven't turned on QoS on the new router yet, but still...

same thing happened to me, i hard-reset(restore to factory defaults) and manually re-enter all the configuration, but chrome and safari still can't login to the router, only IE can.
i tried this on all my computers, chrome and safari returns a password is invalid pop-up right when it connects, then when i login with a password, it flashes a page with white text on it and then goes back to the login page...

and everything works well with IE.

I tried to reflash the router, but i think it failed, all my configuration is still there, nothing changed.

When is d-link going to release a v1.32 where everything gets fixed???????????
