Wireless traffic locking up when connection is flooded
« on: May 20, 2009, 05:46:34 AM »

Hi all.

Got a really strange problem that I'm looking for advice on.

I've recently had a broadband & router upgrade (50Mb & Wireless N) and bought the DWA-556 PCI-E card to connect at sufficient speeds. Everything seems to be working and I can connect at 300Mb without fail every time.

The intermittent problem I get is that randomly my Vista 64 O/S will just seem to lock up all traffic usually when the connection is maxing itself out. The network thinks it's still connected but I can't ping anything at all - not even the router itself. I do get a response from 127.0.0.1, as expected, but the only way I can kick start the network again is either by resetting the NIC (by changing a value in Device Manager) or by using Diagnose and Repair from the Network & Sharing Center.

I know it's not the cable modem or router as I've had my laptop alongside and that connection remains active and doesn't drop at all.

I tried some alternative Atheros drivers yesterday hoping that would make a difference. Although I had a lot more options in the NIC driver properties page, the lockup still occured.

I'm running out of ideas as I've tried most things. Can anyone offer any advice? Someone suggested changing the MTU on the router to a lower setting might help, but it sounds like clutching at straws.

HELP!

Are you using the D-Link utility or Windows? Have you tried the latest driver from D-Link?

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I initially used the 64 bit driver from D-link's website - that locked up. I then used the driver that's available on Windows Update - that locked up. Finally moved on to the Atheros one I'm currently using which also locked up. I'm at my wits end.

I'm using Vista to manage the wireless connection. I can't see the option in Vista to allow other software to manage the wireless connection. It's not as prominent as it was in XP. Much like a lot of Vista's "features".

One thing I haven't tried yet is the beta driver linked here - something I'll take a look at on the weekend
