dns 320 help
« on: October 26, 2013, 09:51:06 AM »

Hi,

New here, and struggling.

I have a 320 share center, it has 2 hard drives with data on already in it and hasn't been used for awhile with a house move in between now and its last use.

I am trying to set the 320 up so i can use it in my new home, i forgot the old admin password etc so tried a reset as i was told this would not affect the data on the drives.

Also managed to lose the start up CD, but have since found the files on here.

Really all i want to do is set up the network so i can use it here, i have been through the set up process but it seems that when i get to the end of set up, the only choice i have is to re format the hard drives, which will delete all the data that is on there currently? ( a pop up confirms this).

Is there anyway i can access the data on the hard drives wirelessly or even through a wired connection?

Id like to be able to use the share center again, but its fairly pointless without the data i have on it?

thanks in advance for any suggestions!

First up I assume you can get to the web interface.  If not you need to run something like netscan and see what IP address has been assigned to your DNS-320.

Using the web interface turn on the services you want to use - basically read the web user interface section on the manual and wo what you need to do.

The above assumes that your DNS-320 is wired to your router so you can use a wired or WiFi connection to it.

Thanks for the response Ivan.

I have now managed to get on to the web interface, but still can't seem to get the share center to come up to connect to wirelessly, and therefore still can't access the files?

probably something very simple im not doing?

thanks again.

At least the unit is working.  I assume you got there using a wired connection between the DNS-320 and router and then a wired connection between your router and computer - please confirm.

The next thing I would recommend is that you give the DNS-320 a fixed IP address that is outside the range supplied by your router - that way you can contact it by IP rather than trying to remember the name.

Using the web interface switch on the FTP server and the Samba (CIFS) server after you have setup a user.
With those up and running you should be able to run a simple test using FileZilla Client (Google it) on your computer
(the host is the IP you gave the DNS-320, Username is the one you setup on the DNS-320, Likewise the password, the port is 21 then click on Quickconnect)

All going well you should see Volume_1 listed in the right hand pane, which when you click on the + sign should give you all your directories.

If that is working then you should be able to connect to the DNS-320 via WiFi from another computer or tablet.

Sorry if I have missed anything out as I am going from memory as we only run one instance of win XP in a VM at work an I don't have win anything here at home.
