hi..i got a wd10eads drive..plannin on gettin a dns-323 box...wanted to check if i format it in ext2 and stat using with windows (with ifs)... and wen i get the dns 323 will i be able to just plug it in and use it or will the dns again format the drive ?...thanks !

Wouldn't do that. More than likely the 323 will want to format it once you connect it.

in the scenario you said you should be good.

best bet is just to shut down the DNS when you pull the HDD and turn it back on after you reinstall.

im confused...will it format or not ?..or maybe i shud buy the dns quickly before loading up the hdd incase it formats it again !!..

It would probably be better formatting the drive inside the DNS-323 - I'm not saying that you can't format it outside, but, unless you know the specific sizes and types of the partitions created, as well as the files contained in those partitions, you'll probably run into difficulties.

The DNS-323 does not use a single ext2 partition - it creates four partitions, one of which is used for data, another for configuration files, and I have no idea what the last two are used for (one may be swap).

It will want to format it for the reasons fordem mentions. Best wait unless you want to move all the data over a second time.

thanks..i got the box day before..and it did format...luckily i dint delete the data from the original destination..so already had all the data on another drive...anyways thanks for the help !!..
