NEVER MIND--sheesh. I should have not said a thing--now it fails to connect/print on the MacBook Pro.

I guess I'm beginning to wonder what the heck the point is to release even a beta that seems not to work at all on either the Mac or Windows platform. I have it installed on an Intel/Mac, a PowerPC/Mac and a Dell/Intel.

None work.

I have a suggestion for the folks at D-Link:

Find 100 monkeys and put them to work programming on 100 machines and I hazard a guess that they'll come up with something that works sooner--either that or ''Hamlet.''

Yes, I am instigating but sheesh already. How hard can it really be to come up with at least one consistently working bit of software/firmware?

Done ranting.

Well... no don't be that harsh. I bought a linksys/cisco router before this one and that was a piece of CRAP. This router actually works and is MUCH faster. I still have nothing but kind words about this D-Link product because it works like advertised. I can do without the sharepoint but it would be nice to get it working eventually...

I don't think most people have a problem with this router - I personally really like it, but then again I am for the moment staying solidly with 1.21EU after all the horror tales I have seen with people updating to 1.31, and suffering from various quirks they never had with, it seems, EXACTLY the same set-up with 1.21 or 1.22.

I would love to attach a hard drive to this router so I could access data when I am on the road via MobileMe, and I would risk the update for that, but why risk it when the very app. that D-Link have brought out to do just that does not seem to work. So I believe this is where the frustration is, not with the router itself.

Right... The windose sharepoint works great but they are just having a problem developing their software for use with mac. I hope they iron out their bugs eventually, o & btw... does mobileme have a monthly fee?

I did not miss that fact, as this whole thread is people trying the new Beta, - I am very pleased that D-Link is working to fix this problem, but it is still Beta, people on this thread are having issues with it, and as my MacBook pro & Router are the core of the communication side of my business, I cannot risk the 1.31 upgrade & Shareport until the latter is full release & stable.

But, again, it is greatly appreciated that D-Link are working to fix this problem for us Mac-users; like many, I want reasonably -priced alternatives to the expensive Apple offerings!

I was testing Mac Shareport with the latest DIR655 Router firmware (1.32NA beta) and Shareport Utility 1.10 beta. With that said I installed the Shareport Utility 1.10 using the 10_4 PKG and nothing else. Then rebooted the computer. I had no problem mounting or unmounted my OT4 harddrive. I set it up with two partitions. One HFS+ and the other was FAT32 and then I tried NTFS. Shareport works with any of these. Mounting and unmounted is not a problem any more with the latest router firmware. I did have firmware 1.30 and tried Shareport Utility 1.01 and 1.10 with no luck. The key seems to be the new beta firmware 1.32NA beta.

NOW THE BAD NEWS......
I used 4.5GB file to test copying transfer rates. Test (1) transfer from OT4 harddrive to desktop PC (windowsXP sp3 TBase100 LAN) speeds were 20min for a file that size. Good USB2 speeds. Test (2) transfer from OT4 harddrive to desktop Mac (OSx 10.5.7 wireless N) I tried five times and failed five times. I would be going a long fine then file transfer would just stop. At that point your in trouble. You can't quit Shareport or the copying in progress. Your frozen. The finder won't relaunch, you just get the spinning beach ball of death. I waited for hours to see if the transfer would start moving again, no luck. The only thing you can do is hold the power button down for a HARD SHUT DOWN. Start your MAC again AND RESTART THE ROUTER to get Shareport to work again. If you have a PC and a PC partition on the drive. (PC won't mount HFS+ unless you have Macdrive7) You can make Shareport work again by mounting and unmounted the drive twice on the PC. (First time doesn't work) This seems to work as good as restarting the router. Test (3) changed computers to MacBook laptop (OSX 10.5.6 Wireless N) Same problem, copy so far anywhere from 200 megs to 2 gigs then your dead. TEST (4) same Macbook this time wired to TBase1000 LAN. same problem.

CONCLUTIONS....
Shareport for the PC works great. Shareport for the Mac has come a long way in the last couple of months, but still not stable enough to be usable.

DLINK keep up the good work! This is starting to show promise. I look forward to you next beta, and a stable Shareport for MAC   ;D

UPDATE: GOOD NEWS!!!!!  ;D
I was looking to find an updated sxuptp.kext from Silex Technology to see if that would help. I downloaded the SX Virtual Link Utility for USB device connection for Mac OSX Ver. 3.1.0 The cosetup installer works perfectly. The SX Virtual Link application sees my DLINK DIR655 USB harddrive. I mounted the drive and started copying some files from my Mac desktop and my Macbook. I have had no transfer errors. The same file that took 20 minutes on a wired LAN on my PC took a 35 minutes on my wireless N Mac. This is working good! Heres the link to the download. http://www.silexeurope.com/en/home/support/productgroups/common-downloads/device-server-and-virtual-link.html

THANK YOU!

The above link for SX Virtual Link's software worked PERFECTLY. FIRST TIME!  I'm connected to a Raid level 1 Silicon Image external USB enclosure w/ two 1-gig drives and it is streaming a movie effortlessly over my WIFI -- DIR-628, firmware 1.20NA.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU... that software now makes this D-Link router fully usable for the intended purpose on a Mac.

And while I appreciate the development time and hurdles put into D-Link's version, that SX software has got it right and it works instantly after 1 reboot with no dropouts.

More Testing: My Desktop Mac seems to work fine, but my Macbook is more touchy. If it drops its connection or someone (my boy) puts it to sleep while you are copying files you are in trouble. It will say you still connected, but It has gotten lost and wont let you even disconnect. Back to holding power button down for hard shutdown and reseting the router. If Dlink can get this to work with TimeMachine backup over wireless (Test it to work with drop outs) then we have arrived.

I can't get it to work. I sure hope the developers keep working on this.
