Upgrade from DGL-4100 Suggestion
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:10:04 AM »

I have a 4100 and a separate DAP-2553 for wireless.  I've always preferred using separate devices.  Looking ahead at the future as I know the 4100 wont last forever, I've been starting to look at different units.  Not too many options out there with wired only GIGe routers.  The ones that do exist have mixed reviews (non dlink).

I have about 6 hard wired Gige devices in the house and a bunch or phones/tablets and laptops connected at various times.  Gaming, streaming video a must.  The 4100 has never failed me.

I really am turned off by the "can shaped units and prefer to keep my stuff stacked.  As far as sticking with dlink, how do these measure up as far as similar router performance as the 4100 without the wireless turned on?   As dlink seems to be moving to newer designs, I'm not sure how long these will be around and worth the investment.

DIR-655
DIR-665
DIR-825

Also considered using the DSR-250 but not many reviews out there on it at all.

thanks in advance

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Whats GIGe? ???

All the routers I've tested have worked well, including the cylinder style. They actually work better than box style. Do you need or think you will have a need for both 2.4 and 5Ghz radio?

Please review the DIR-865L, 868L and 826L that I did in there perspective forums.

There will be differences as the 4100 has become out dated and no longer in production and development. Newer features and WiFi are major differences.

If your still interested in the box style, I recommend checking out the DIR-835, or 655.

FYI, All 8 series routers are mostly dual band routers. All 6 series routers are mostly 2.4Ghz only routers.

The DIR-665 is no longer in production. The DIR-825 and 655 are still in production.

If your wanting to keep with the DGL series, the 5500 is pretty good.

I wish the 4500 was still around. You might find a good used one on fleabay or amazon though.

Let us know if you have any more questions or what you decide to go with. I'm enjoying the D-Link line of routers.
