DIR-655, inability to adjust wireless settings
« on: December 19, 2013, 11:36:11 AM »

Hi D-link.

Okay well I have a D-link router model DIR-655 with, apparently, a version similar to 1.3.
Okay so I'm having a problem where I can't save settings I make in my D-link routing settings page and it has been an ongoing problem for days now. I've researched this problem and found the possibility that it is the version and id have to set up my router all over again with manually configuered settings. Now, I'm not sure I can do that without help/without causing other problems and having to redo the process all over again. please help me save my adjustments without having to manually reconfigure the whole router aagain. I just want to set up a Wep key, adjust the TX rate, and disable securespot. Please HALP!  :-[

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router. Rev A or B will be seen.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

A FW update maybe needed. They removed SecureSpot in a recent version of FW if your router is Rev A.

Okay the Hardware Version is A1, the Firmware version is 1.04, and I'm located in North Smithfield, RI, US.
I cannot try the setting adjustment suggested because I cannot save the settings. Advice? :'(

Can you try this?

1.04 is pretty old firmware, I would try to update it first then do your settings.  You may not be able to go straight to the newest one though, if I remember right you need to flash to the 1.10 version then you can go straight to the 1.37NA.  Doing so will get rid of securespot as it has been removed from the newer firmware.

Use IE in Compatibility mode if you are having issues with the web interface.
