Port Forwarding doesn't work
« on: January 08, 2014, 03:13:48 PM »

Hi.

I wanted to use a Raspberry Pi as a Mumble server, and for that reason forward the necessary port. But it doesn't work. Any open port checker says that the port is still closed, and I can't use the external adress either to connect to it.

Both in the Virtual Server and Port Forwarding settings of my D-Link 645 I've entered the IP local of my Raspberry Pi that's directly connected via cable to the router, and entered the port as both UDP and TCP.

Anyone got any advice?

Please help. :)

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Router Hardware version: A1
Router Firmware:  1.01 Fri 08 Jul 2011
What region are you located: Germany

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Uhm, no idea. Something fast.
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Uhm, got to check most of that stuff. The company I'm at is called UnityMedia.

Router and Wired Configurations
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.

Done. Didn't find any Traffoc Shapping settings though.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Done.

Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Done.

Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Done.

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Guess it does.

If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Done.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
Done.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Done.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.

Could't find those settings.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Is set to auto.

Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Done.

So far, nothing helped. All ports are still closed.

  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router

Hi.

As far as I know, the modem has no built-in router. When I initially signed up at the ISP for the connection, they wanted to sell me some router in addition to the modem, but I already had the D-Link so I denied that offer.

The modem is a cisco Model EPC3208. I checked the user guide, but it says nothing about port forwarding.

Thanks for all the help. Still, this is a bit depressing. My guild of nearly 200 people is waiting for me to get the server up and running. :(

Ya I don't see any information that your model modem has a built in router.
Can you tell me what you see on the Status/Device Info/Wan Section for the Internet IP address? It should be a ##.##.###.### and not 192.168 or 172.### or maybe a 10.### address...

Ok, can you get ahold of your ISP and ask them to confirm that your getting a public IP address? Not sure if you have a private here or not...you need a public address on the router. We need to ensure that you are in a single NAT operation to fully get PF working right. Or we can try Virtual Server as well.

My ISP is hard to reach, I sent them a request already two days ago, and the hotline is expensive and often lets you wait a long time. I'll try it again tomorrow (their hotline is closed already).

It seems that the ISP is the cause of the problem. I checked some boards, and some people said something about a switch from IPv4 to IPv6 and then not being able to forward any ports anymore all of a sudden.

Well, my ISP replied to my mail. The entire mail says that I should use a "so-called 'Router'".  >:( ::)

I had a chat with a support guy of theirs, but after saying some more general stuff he gave me the number to some tech guy, who I wasn't able to reach.

The general support guy said, portforwarding is not prevented by my ISP. However, that newer accounts get IPv6 which might cause portforwarding problems. He stressed that these problems are not caused by them (the ISP), but couldn't tell me how to get it to work.

I'll try later again to get the tech support guy on the line.

So I finally managed to get the tech support on the phone. The tech support said "port forwarding? Well officially I'm the tech support, but I don't know about such things. And there is nobody else here who does. So I can't answer that question. Regarding ipv4 or ipv6 I can tell you that you got an ipv4 connection, though it can be changed to ipv6 if you fill out the required forms".

That was that.

Figures.

The PF should be working for you on IPv4 on the 645, if you have a modem with out NAT and the 645 is correctly set up either using PF with uPnP disabled or with Virtual Server. If thats all set up well, then it should work, unless the ISP is doing something.

Typical ISP response.  ::)
