DNS 320L on a college lan network
« on: February 20, 2014, 12:09:15 PM »

Hello there

I am a student residing in a university hostel room, the university provides each room with a lan(ethernet) port through which we access the internet. A week back I received a DNS 320LW along with a switch(one with 4 lan ports to replicate one port).
The current arrangement is something like this. the lan port on the wall is connected to the switch(lan port1). lan port 2 is connected to my laptop, lanport 3 is connected to the NAS

While setting up the NAS using the CD, I used the DHCP settings but by doing so the option of setting up Dynamic DNS, email doesn't show up and when it comes to the point of registering a dlink account, it says the network was not able to connect. It formats the HDD and finishes setup but I'm not able to map my NAS in windows

My primary aim is to use the NAS as a external HDD, the other options will be used occasionaly.
Should I set it up using Static IP?

Any inputs/help would be appreciated

It sounds like you are using an unmanaged switch, with no UI. If that's the case, then you should set a static IP address on the DNS-320LW. Once you set up the static IP address you should be able to manually create a network map on any PC located on the same switch.

you should ask your hostel  it manager

Its a centralized system, 11 hostels are managed by a central office. That is not the point, the administrators are a pain in the ass.

Should I use the IP through which my laptop accesses the internet i.e the IP which my switch appears to be cloning?

You can also wait for DHCP to assign an IP address an then try fixing that IP address as a static IP and see if the DNS-320L could hold onto it following a network disconnect or reboot. There's no harm in trying. Even if the static IP address doesn't hold, if you keep the DNS-320L on 24x7 and the university network is stable, you should be able to keep the same IP for an extended period of time (perhaps months).

Dlink DGS-1008D

The problem with this method which I encountered was, DHCP assigns an IP address like 168.xxx.xx.xx.
The network only reboots when there is a power cut which happens very rarely, and from what I've noticed is that the ip address which is allotted to me has remained the same even after a network reboot, will need to verify this once i get the opportunity

The fact that th IP address assigned to you stays the same after a network reboot means that you have a semi-stable IP address to work with.  What remaining issues do you have?

I made it work in one way:
1) I removed the lan wire from the switch and directly connected the NAS to my laptop and set it up, using the D-Link Storage utility, I set it up using DHCP and was able to map the drive. even the ip(169.254.xxx.xx) provided me with a UI, but when I connected the laptop+NAS+network ethernet using the switch, that particular ip which I specified above doesn't work.
D-Link storage utility shows the ip address as 0.0.0.0 and when i try to input my admin password to apply DHCP settings, it says wrong admin password where I had applied this same password to setup the NAS 5 minutes prior directly connected to the laptop.

Did you try logging into the DNS-320L web UI using a browser on your laptop while both devices are connected to the switch.

  • Navigate to Management > System Info > LAN Setup > LAN Information to see all the network settings
  • Navigate to Management > Network Management > LAN Setup > Static IP to setup a Static IP based on the network settings.

I'm not able to get to the WebUI as the Ip address through which I accessed the webUI while connected directly doesn't work anymore or doesn't seem to exist anymore.

A simple solution would be to get a router, so you can manage your own IP domain and then use port forwarding to expose the ShareCenter to the outside world. This approach would also provide you with wireless access for your laptop.
