I am not able to view my DIR-825 router to enable shareport and 'No USB devices are detected' is displayed in the SharePort utility window. I have a USB jump drive connected to the DIR-825's USB port. The router's USB settings are set to 'Shareport'.

I noticed that I was running original release versions so upgraded the DIR-825's firmware to latest release (1.11NA,  2009/04/27) and re-installed PC SharePort USB Utility v1.14. I still am not able to see the router or any USB devices.

Any insight would be helpful.

Did you try the newest SharePort Utility v1.10 which is required for the latest router firmware.

Unfortunately, there are some bugs in the new SharePort.

I found the issue: First I had the latest firmware and shareport utility. Upon reading the fine print, the latest shareport utility was not compatible with the latest firmware so I had to roll the shareport util back a version.

I then found out that the shareport utility doesn't like HDD larger than 80G attached. So I attached a 2G usb drive and all is well.

Just waiting on the next release to be able to attach my 500GB USB external drive!

WHAAA???    I need new readers. Walter, is that fine print in the Shareport user manual? (dumb question, no doubt) I think I have it here somewhere. I have a 120G USB hard drive w/enclosure hanging off of my DIR-655 and have been suffering from incessant delayed write errors. Don't tell I've been wracking my brain all because I didn't read the fine print! (I said....Don't tell me!) Reading this forum is better than watching TV. Here, at least I learn something.

HA!!!!!    Another wise guy! I believe Jimi Hendrix wrote a song titled "If 6 were 9" (that fits into this thread in my little brain). Lower numbers are the latest. Higher numbers are the oldest. When it reaches 0, it's perfect.

Walter, could you please point me in the direction where you read the fine print regarding disk size limitations. I read the Shareport manual and I couldn't find it (unless it is so fine I need telescopes for reading glasses). Thanks.

There's no limitation. I'm running a 500 GB device.

The issue is power: small USB HDD don't have their own power source and depend on power provided by the USB port. For larger HDD's the power source does not suffice and the USB HDD (or the HUB used!) needs his own power source.

I could just SCREAM! Well, one day when this whole Shareport thing gets ironed out to MY satisfaction, I'd like to spend a month or 2 discussing these delayed write errors I've been getting. Of course, this would also mean you will have to put your life on hold for my benefit.

OK, not a problem. My enclosure has a very nice power supply that takes up way too much room. It also has a cooling fan with some way cool disco lights on it. The thing is so bright I don't need light bulbs anymore.

I do not see how the delayed errors are a Shareport issue. If the problem also occurs with another HDD it might be a router hardware problem. Have you tried another USB HDD?

I made my statement with the presumption that you can read my mind. After spending weeks researching delayed write errors I came to the conclusion that Shareport was not the problem. I can only deduce that it is an unknown problem with wired network and wireless networked USB drives. Present company excluded. grrrrrrr. I say unknown because I have yet to find a single "expert" that could point to one thing and say "this is the problem". I would estimate that there are at least 100 times more complaints from people experiencing delayed write errors in every manner possible than complaints registered on the D-Link boards and that this problem has been around since at least 2005, probably much earlier. If I connect the drive directly to my laptop it works flawlessly. The drive I'm using used to be in a tower system and it finally dawned on me one day that I used to get delayed write errors when I would try to do a backup to it over my home network. I had long since forgotten that little fact and so I was unfairly blaming Shareport for the problem. The ONLY thing that I can't figure out with Shareport now is why I can't keep a stable connection. Again, after reading the boards, hearing yours and the D-Link engineer's testimony that collectively, you were not experiencing any problem I begrudgingly began to look at other factors - specifically my platform from hardware to software and all points in between. The solution still eludes me. I am at a point now where I have spent so much energy working this problem that I have exhausted all ideas and I have to step back now and let my brain work on the problem in the background until I have another Eureka! moment. If you have any experience with delayed write errors on networked drives and have a suggestion or suggestions for fixing this problem, I am all ears.

Ehhh...Shareport and the feature to connect a HDD has been around since december 2008....

Possibility: When the USB HDD is connected, have a look at your your disk's properties-> policy. It needs to be set for 'fast removal'. Setting it to 'Better performance' can result to errors.

Well, what I meant is that delayed write errors in general have been receiving complaints since then and before. Actually, it goes back to Windows 98, come to think of it.

Thanks for the suggestion but...been there, done that. I've done everything that's been suggested as far as Windows settings and even registry tweaks. There are "Hot fixes" for some situations but the source of my error (as reported by the Event Viewer) fails to fall into any of the categories for those fixes.

I had a problem with Shareport (1.14) not detecting my Seagate 1 TB USB HDD connected to my DIR-855 (1.12EU)
It would only detect if i connected my laptop (Vista) to the DIR-855 through cable, not wireless.

Problem was resolved after disabling my ethernet adapter, keeping only the wifi adapter enabled, then rebooting.

So it seems like Shareport “locks” onto the initial adapter used for connecting.

Now it works like a charm, with no noticeable delay r/w on the HDD vs connecting directly to the laptops usb-port.

Can you go to Control Panel and then Network and Sharing Center and see the D-Link?
