Email fields way too short in Email Notification
« on: June 09, 2009, 04:19:59 AM »

Wow. I thought the days of limited fields for inputting things like email addresses were long over.

I cannot input my full email address in the provided box/field which seems to be limited to 20 or so characters.

We are in the 21st century you know.

I apologize if I am diverting the subject of your complaint, Summerstormpicture, but has anyone been able to successfully configure their email settings if MSN (via Live mail) is your email provider? Verizon FiOS is my ISP. I've read in another forum that I should try using their SMTP server address but that didn't work either. The SMTP server address I'm using is "smtp.live.com", port 25 (unblocked). I've found workarounds in other router forums but none in the DIR-655 forum. I was going to start a new thread but when I was doing a search and this thread popped up and it was started TODAY I thought I'd jump in with my question. Don't mean to steal your Thunder Summerstorm (Small joke there. Very small).

Perhaps encrypted SMTP is not supported?

OK, went a different route. I added my Verizon email address. They have a proper SMTP, outgoing mail server address - "outgoing.verizon.net". I still can't get it to work as I receive no logs. Demonized, would you explain encrypted SMTP?

SSl/TTL...

Did you set an option for sending the logs (send when log is full or with a schedule)? When the log is not full it willnot be send. If you want to keep tabs every second you need to configure the syslog server.

Well, I hit the option to SEND log which, I presume, would send it immediately. I was doing this in order to test my connectivity. If this is wrong then I need to do as you suggest. Anyone else out there with a Verizon email account successfully setup email logs in the DIR-655? Thanks.

Have I been Demonized now? I'm feeling kinda...evil.

Wow. Talk about a thread getting hijacked? I haven't felt this since I was in Colombia.

My fault summerstormpicture. I knew I should have started my own thread. Consider me served. I will cease and desist. (do your email settings work?) Sorry, sorry - 5 minute major for high sticking.

I enabled the mail settings for you to try it out. And to my embarrassment...it fails to send  :-[

[INFO]   Tue Jun 09 21:19:44 2009   Failure sending log email - try again in 2 minutes
[INFO]   Tue Jun 09 21:19:44 2009   Sending log email after administrator request

All the settings are correct. So something is wrong. I have my DIR655 configured as AP for a change. Do you have that config too?

My router is my gateway. You've done something different as I don't even see the messages you display after clicking on SEND LOG.  My Firewall software says that my mail port is open so I'm fairly certain that it is not a problem. I did set up the Verizon account in Windows Live Mail - Desktop, and it configured automatically and works great. I'll look inside that to see if perhaps Verizon requires a secondary login that is automatically taken care of with Live Mail. I appreciate your effort and your suggestions, Demonized. I've lived without setting up email on this, and previous routers for years. Ever since I discovered Shareport I've suddenly taken an interest in getting it to work. I'm moving this to a new thread.

Sorry summerstormpicture.

Don't worry, Summerstormpictures made his point. Or was there a question in his post we missed?
But we can talk about the sense and nonsense of 20+ letter email aliases of course...

In previous firmware it (emailing) worked without a problem. But I haven't used it in the 1.3x firmware series. Until now and it fails to work...

Also very funny: Although I disabled the emailling of logs its persistent in getting the mails sent  ???:

[INFO]   Tue Jun 09 22:21:44 2009   Failure sending log email - try again in 64 minutes
[INFO]   Tue Jun 09 21:49:44 2009   Failure sending log email - try again in 32 minutes

Well, you are one up on me. I can't even get that far. Is this another 1.32Beta bug???? I swear, I am at my wits end. If I don't get email notifications working I'm gonna drive into a bridge abutment. Now, really, D-Link, do you want that guilt hanging over you for the rest of your life?

Don't answer that!

Thanks again, Demonized. Sorry I caused a problem on your end.

Don't know what changed between now and this morning but I'm a D-link, DIR-655, Router Log receiving fool person. If I press "Email Now", it emails it NOW. Thanks D-Link engineers. You guys fixed the problem while I wasn't looking.

I'm using 1.21, and I enabled mailing of the logs, but I can't seem to get it working using two different SMTP servers. The message in the log is this:

[WARN]   Fri Jun 12 00:26:07 2009   SMTP client failed to send email

I have SSL checked, and have entered my correct password and full email address. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Mind if I ask what SMTP servers you are using? When looking for an SMTP address for MSN mail it became apparent that some SMTP addresses change frequently so you "might" be entering and old SMTP address. After mine suddenly began working my mailbox was filling up fast because after I opened TCP port 25 in my McAfee firewall I began receiving a firestorm of TCP requests that were being blocked by the router firewall (yay D-Link firewall). So, I tried closing that port and discovered that doing so had no effect on receiving mail, but it did stop the unwanted requests.
