DDNS Upgrade won't except the serial number
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:48:16 AM »

I got the email asking me to upgrade my DDNS account to carry on using the service.  However, when putting all the details in it says the serial number is not recognised.  This is the same 13 digit S/N code on the base of DNS-320 that I used to register in the first place.  How do I correct this?

You have confirmed that the email is in fact from DDNS and not someone trying to hijack your account?

What you describe is a very common way for harvesting user information by using a link in the email that is to a spoof site setup for just that.  To check you should go directly to the DDNS site and see if you can log in there.  If you can then change your password fast.

I'm pretty sure its fine.  Firstly the email contained a lot of specific information even most of friends wouldn't know and the likelyhood of finding a match would be minute.  Secondly the website I had bookmarked when I registered won't let me do anything unless I update my details so it must be correct.

This is the website: https://www.dlinkddns.com/

Just to confirm, DYN DNS has been sending emails to all of dlinkddns users saying that you need to "Confirm Account" to keep your service.  They give you 90 days and then I am sure your account will either be closed or suspended.  They also make some troubling statement about most devices qualify for 6 months of service, but it is pretty vague as to what they mean.  I posted info on this in the DNS-325 forum earlier.  One guy tried to do it and got an error message saying they needed 17 digits for his MAC ID number.  I went directly to the dlink ddns page not the one in the email, and it has a "Confirm Account" link on there too.  I will tackle this myself over the weekend.  That is all I have now.

Thanks for the info cable2.  We don't use that service because we don't need it having our own domain and servers and having spent too many years cleaning up after problems we tend to err on the side of caution.

Trouble is they are directing people with issues to this site. I already use it so it's no problem but I am stuck now! I too had the MAC issue and they told me they classify the colon as a digit so that solved that problem but all other issues to be directed to the forum I originally posted in before it was moved to this one. If you don't know and they don't respond further, I lose that functionality because the serial number suddenly is no longer recognised and the time expires.

Garawa,
This is a bit like "sending you down a rat hole" or telling you that "you can't get there from here."  To me it seems clear, Dlink is backing away from the "free" ddns service.  This in my mind changes a plus for buying Dlink to a gigantic minus.  Dlink has known about DYN DNS going the pay only route for probably a lot longer than the general public.  They apparently have made their decision.  My guess is that even if your serial number was accepted now, in another 4-5 months, you will get another email from DYN DNS again, telling you that your period of "free" service will soon expire...giving you one option, pay or do without.  The real problem is Dlink's products don't give you options for ddns services other than DYN DNS.  It is either pay DYN DNS or do without the service.  I wish I was wrong and will happily apologize to the folks at Dlink, but I am betting that I will not have to.  Dlink could easily put out an official policy on this issue and clarify what products are covered and for how long...but they are letting DYN DNS do their dirty work.  If not Dlink, speak up.

If that is indeed the case, and I suspect that you are correct, I can see a large number of people installing FunPlug to get round the DYN DNS lockin.

I had better tell my programmer to start learning about FunPlug.

I have a confession!  I have never used the service but that is largely down to always having other stuff to do.  I bought the NAS primarily from cost, next as it did most of what I needed it to and the remote access side of things was the optional extra.  I may well have still bought it but I can envisage needing this is the coming future!

Cable 2, I got that feeling and they stress about the service lasting "up to 6 months" which seems utterly pointless.  As far as I am concerned it is a con and that gets my back up more than anything.  Telling me it is because its my serial number and then cutting off communication stinks!  I probably wouldn't complain if they said the service was terminating and a paid service can be put in place instead.  I would understand that.

Ivan, I have done nothing to mine.  It is a basic home network storage device.  The Xbox struggles to see the photos (Xbox 360 issue) but my amp plays music files fine and it stores my backups.  What is FunPlug and should/how do I install it?  I feel EVERYBODY has added lots of extra stuff to theirs that makes it easier but all the things I read elsewhere all assumes the reader knows what is being talked about in the first place!!!

To find out about FunPlug go over to the DNS-323 forum and read the sticky about it.

As with all changers to the basic system, unless you must have something the newer firmware or addon gives you don't need to make any changes.

As I have said we make money on the number of times people think the latest firmware, bios update, addon is what they must have - it's the latest therefore it must be better, is the usual reason given - regardless of the fact it will break something they really do need to have working so they pay to have everything fixed.

Superb thanks.  I did read the comments on the latest firmware where someone said their DNLA server stopped working, that would be nigh on catastrophic for me!!!  Most times users are urged to update for security etc whereas this the 3rd or 4th time I have read about only doing it if needed.  Very bizarre but very welcome advice!
