WiFi Drops and Inconsistent download speeds, what's up?!?
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:33:10 AM »

Had this thing for 4 months, used to work fine for about a month. It sits in a closet next to another WiFi router I use running DD-WRT and the DIR-655 is used as an access point pretty much as it plugs into a linux firewall and I use it so I can wirelessly access my internal network.  Machines I use at home are my iphone, a vista 64-bit laptop and a win xp pro latop.

Anyhow, this problem is not machine specific... I can rule that out because it happens on everything!  My connection keeps dropping, and it especially happens when I'm downloading large files.  Usually using a download manager or something.  I'll be using my max download bandwidth then all of a sudden you see the wifi icon in the lower right of my screen have an X through it.  I have to disable/enable my wireless card to get it back online.  So that was with the 1.21 firmware. I upgraded to the 1.31 firmware and same thing but worse it seems. Are there any things I can do to troubleshoot this or is this a problem with the router?  I can connect to my DD-WRT router (which is on my DMZ) and everything runs fine.  There is something with this Dlink's firmware and\or settings.  I'm running a hidden SSID with WPA2 encryption.  If I use WEP my download speeds are significally lower.

I should add that I'm a Systems Engineer by day so I'd like to think I know what I'm doing.  This router operates as an Access Point and things like the DIR-655 SPI firewall is turned off, QoS is off, the port forwarding and routing is not used, DHCP is off.  The only thing I didn't know about was the DNS Relay check box so I checked it.  The router has an IP (0.2) and the Gateway is my firewall's NIC card (0.1).

Might not apply, but checkout my experience with wireless restarts.
