I do understand what are trying to say about using wireless at all within the home. I have a number of reasons for using it. I am not longer able to perform the DIY projects I used to do before my body kind of gave out on me. I have been trying , off and on over two years, to get someone to install CAT6 in the condo where I live. In part because it's harder to do, I've not been successful. It's also very convenient to use wireless for the four laptops in our house. Have you ever watched a 10-year-old girl move from the couch to the chair to the table to the desk and back to the couch while she's IMing and Webkinzing her fingers away on a small laptop?

The other point is that this N wireless gear is being marketed for this, though I don't think it works very well at all for this purpose.

I get in trouble for this regularly but I am gonna go there again.  There is no situation where it is OK to need wireless in a home environment!

Think about that, read it a couple times and let it sink in.

Wireless is a convenience and not even a very convenient convenience if you ask me.  Between the number of threads complaining about slow wireless performance in their environment, to the number of people who won't test their wireless properly because the rightfully view it as a security risk.  The risk is inherent to wireless and the ONLY encryption that is currently considered secure is WPA(2)/EAP!  Even then it should not be relied on as secure.

Media is huge, there is no good way to encode audio or video that allows faithful reproduction and manageable file size.  This file size becomes stream bandwidth and running that through the air is just a bad idea.  If you want to stream HD wirelesly then please build a little FM station from a kit at your local electronics store and broadcast a private usage HDTV channel, just don't put to much power behind it or you will get a call from the FCC.

I am more sympathetic to your concerns than I came off as at first.  I have just seen time and time again friends and family asking me to install a wireless system because they think their abode is uniquely unwireable.  And without fail these situations end with people having an unreliable (if ever present) or not as capable network as they would like.  This usually leads to either people who resent the entire existence of networks (I know it sounds farfetched, but my various people I have "helped" would back me up), or they end up biting the bullet and wiring the abode.  I find that in these situations the very unwireable situation is usually resolved easier (and cheaper) than the maintenance of a wireless connection.

Then we have the secondary bias, I may have been raised weird, but I have a keen understanding of the use of the words want and need.  Call me unsympathetic if you must but your 10 yr old with a laptop does not need to be buzzing around the room like a honeybee.  I used the word need in my statement because I understand it is a wonderful convenience for spontaneous and unimportant usage.  I do use wireless at home, however I don’t need or rely upon it and I do have a piece of CAT5 laying next to my bed for use with my laptop.

As for marketing, that’s a bit outside my reach and I am certain the previous poster had it right that it works for D-Link in the lab, but hard to wire houses make for hard to wireless houses.

You may have been raised weird, while I spent two years specifically studying human behavior and how the use of language effects those behaviors. I too understand the difference between need and want. In reality, we need very little to sustain our lives. We need basic shelter from the elements, sustenance to sustain our bodies and the occasional opportunity to procreate. That's it. The rest is luxury, which some cultures avoid or even forbid. Fast forward to the USA and the 21st Century. We are way past need - we want a lot. I choose to enjoy as much of it as I wish and try to practice a level of moderation that is comfortable to me. That means that our 10-year-old granddaughter gets to be a honeybee with her laptop and I buy wireless N gear to solve a problem I want to solve. My grandparents were born in tiny farm villages in rural Imperial Russia. One had a cow that essentially lived in the house. Another was the blacksmith's son. I've seen a picture of one grandmother at 14 standing in front of her house with mud half way up her heavy boots. She was smiling. Like I said, fast forward to USA and the 21st Century.

Hi

I tried changing my security settings to WPA2 Only with AES but none of my laptops could connect. They have Intel 4965 n cards in them. When i changed it back to Auto WPA/WPA2 then they started to connect at 130 but the mbps start to flucuate from 130 to 78 to 52 however i get a excellent/very good signal.

How do i stop my mbps from flucuating and how did you get the Intel 4965 to go at 300mbps?

Although Creator is on the right path, I fear I have disappointing news for you.
The Intel cards are not capable of the 20/40 Channel width that is required for the 300Mbps connection speed. In fact Intel is the whole reason that the 20-20/40Auto mode selection is in the router. Their cards, in my opinion, are inferior to the D-Link Atheros cards.

Here are my settings:

Enable wireless = checked
802.11 mode: mixed n and g (cause 1 laptop has 3945 g and the other 2 are intel 4965n)
Enable Auto channel scan = checked
Transmission Rate = Best(automatic)
Channel Width = Auto 20/40
Security = WPA Personal
WPA Mode = Auto WPA/WPA2
Cihper Type = AES
Group Key interval update = 3600

I'd take a look at your environment. Try disabling the Auto channel scan feature, lock the channel width to 20 only and lock the encryption to WPA2only/Aes.

Hmm, thats a issue. How about just as a test. See if that stabilizes the connection?
