Issues with staying in an Xbox Live party
« on: August 22, 2014, 08:33:34 AM »

I know this is a long shot but I'd figured I'd give it a try.

I have a friend in Canada that lives on a reservation and connects to Xbox via an access point.  Just yesterday they upgraded the access points and he was experiencing issues with staying in an Xbox Live party until I remoted into his pc and fixed some of the router configs.

Now he is having issues with getting into a match on Battlefield 4 ever since they changed the access points.  He had no issues with the previous access points.  Strange thing is is that he has no issues with Battlefield 3 or any other games.

I've used your walk through for setting up a DGL 4500, due to it being a huge help with configuring my DGL 4500 for multiple Xbox in my house and he's still having issues.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The router is a DIR-815 B running 2.0.2 for firmware.

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router with Xbox?  Wired

Has a Factoryreset been performed?  Yes

Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware upates then set up from scratch? Yes, no he believes the firmware is still the same from the factory when he bought it last year.

Was the router working befory firmware updates? Yes

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable via Satellite I want to say.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? No modem not sure what it's connected to and I have a picture to show you but it's Mfr by Motorola.

This is what the DIR-815 is connected to in his house.

This is where the signal comes from.  He told me that it's a community tower.

Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing? Dynamic DNS

What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? I want to say 10 down 5 up due to the speeds 6 down 2 up, tested using Speed Test.

Does Rev B router have custom QoS options as seen in the sticky here? Yes, but unsure on how to set it up due to this QoS being different from others I've seen in the past.

Gaming and QoS for XBL or just enable or disable QoS? Disabled due to confusion on how to set it up, but I've configured the router before without the QoS enabled on the old access points and had no issues.  After they changed the access points is when he started to have issues.

What generation is the Xbox? 1st? Slim? Slim

How do you have QoS or Port Forwarding set up? Port Forwarding with ports 53,80,88,1863 and 3074 via setup configs recommended by http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-815/Xbox_Live_360.htm

As a side note he's called Microsoft to see if they are having any issues with Xbox Live services in his area (which they are not) and they walked him through a few steps they thought would work and they didn't work.  They told him that this could be a third party issue and to contact the company he is having match making issues with, which is hard to believe since as of two days ago he can't play any games now without getting kicked from Xbox Live completely.  He's never had these issues until now.

Also UPnP is checked as enabled as well as the Firewall setting set for UPD Filtering to End Point to End Point checked and the same for TCP Filtering.

Be aware that there maybe in game lag and problems when using SAT ISP as there maybe inherient SAT communication lag while traversing from earth bases stations to the SAT in space and back down. This could be problematic for gaming.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? No modem not sure what it's connected to and I have a picture to show you but it's Mfr by Motorola.
Please correct the link to the picture so we can see it. Copy the Forum Link URL for forum use, not the HTTP link.

This maybe wireless ISP version SAT ISP.

Post can you post a picture of the QoS section on this router?

Gaming and QoS for XBL or just enable or disable QoS? Disabled due to confusion on how to set it up, but I've configured the router before without the QoS enabled on the old access points and had no issues.  After they changed the access points is when he started to have issues.

Remove port 53, 80, and 88 as they are not needing any configuration.

Disable uPnP if you have PF rules set.

Look at the user manual for Rev B. I see it has the same QoS engine seen here:
DIR-645/835/868L/865L/826L Gaming and QoS for XBL

I recommend removing ALL PF rules, re-enable uPnP and set up the Single Xbox rule as see in the example in the sticky...Follow that process. It works well. Been using it for years now.  ;D

Will do thank you.  To be honest I've used your configs for my DGL-4300 (6 years ago) and DGL-4500 (current but looking to upgrade) for multiple Xbox's in my house and this has been the only forum to get it to work with no issues with lag on either Xbox!!  ;D ;D

Wow, you had a post for that and I missed it.  I had it setup that way and removed it because I thought it wasn't working!!  Boy do I feel dumb!! :(

Those are still good routers. I still have 3 4500s. hehe.

It probably was easy to miss as there are 3-4 different versions of these stickies since not all QoS engines are the same. So now that we have ID'd the 815 Rev B, it should work using that sticky.  ;)

Let us know...

As a side question for myself, is it a good thing that I'm still running Firmware version 1.15 on my DGL-4500?  :-\  The only reason I ask is because I've had better luck with that Firmware version versus the other ones and have actually rolled back to that version a few times because I thought the new versions didn't work the same.

If it works don't fix it.

Only one FW version that gave users bad experiences was v1.21. All other versions of FW worked well for me. I recommend keeping v1.1x versions on Rev A1 routers and v1.2x on Rev A2 models.

One thing we've noticed is that the IP address listed here isn't what his IP address is when you do a Google search "what's my ip" the IP address that's returned is  206.188.116.141.  Not sure if that matters but just thought I would bring it up since it doesn't make sense to me because I check my IP with what's my ip on Google and check my router and it matches up!!

I've done all of the suggested steps you mention in the previous post and everything is still the same and he has decided to talk to the technician.  He's noticed that the internet has been worse and he will also bring that up to the technician.  If you have any other ideas I would be open to trying them.  :( :(

As for the issues with in game lag due to him being connected to a satellite he knows all of the ups and downs of his connection, but we've both noticed that he didn't have nearly as many issues as he has now which has become more relevant since the change in the hardware (access points)  >:(.

This is the problem. The WAN IP address has a private address, should be Public. The router is behind a NAT already:

If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
