I have a DIR-655; been in use for a year or so.

The router had been running behind a Motorola SB5101U docsis 2.0 modem.  Consistently getting 30mb download speeds via wired.

Upgraded to a cisco DPC3010 modem (docsis 3.0).  At the modem I'm getting 65.5mb download.  But at the DIR-655 via wired I'm getting just under 10mb download; also getting just under 10mb via wireless.

I've tested at both the modem/router and reproduced the speed difference with 3 different pcs via wired and wireless.

If I put the old modem back in place the wired speeds jump back to 30mb via wired at the router (same as if I go direct to the modem)

I've done the following
- forced the wan connection to 1000mb and 100mb instead of auto; no change across any of them
- factory reset; from the base config I still get the 10mb download speed out of the router
- tried 4 different network cables between the modem and router

Any ideas as to how I can get 60+ download speeds at the router? (like i'm getting out the modem)  Any intel much appreciated

•What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router. A3
•What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status. 1.37NA
•What region are you located? Moorhead MN, USA
•Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? wired
•Has a Factory Reset been performed? yes


Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
•What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? cable
•What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? Cisco DPC 3010
•Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing? Dynamic
•What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? 60/6 (seeing 65.5 / 9 at the modem but 10 / 5 at the router)


More intel,
A buddy of mine has the same config (original modem same model; new modem same model and a dir-655) he is getting 60mb out of the router.  We went through all the settings between his router and mine and made them the same but no joy for me.  The only difference I can see is that he is on a newer hardware version of the 655.

• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

• Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS.
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
• Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
• Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
• Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Based on your input I've done the following

• I've swapped the cable between the modem & router with 4 different cables; 3 of the cat6. Tried a 5th no joy.
• Verified that the MTU should be 1500; that is what its set to
• Shut off QoS
• Unicasting was on; disabled it and it didn't seem to matter; put it back to on as with a working config with the same equipment it is enabled
• DNS Relay is on
• I've verified that I don't have an IP conflict; only having 1 device connected while troubleshooting
• I don't have IPv6 as a choice
• disabled SPI
• enabled uPnP and multi
• disabled WISH
• I have tried WAN speed set at (auto and 1000 and 100) no different

I tested before and after each of the items above and nothing impacted the download speed; still < 10mb at the router.  If I go direct to the modem getting 65mb download.

The very weird part is that if I put the previous modem back into the mix the speed jumps up to 30mb down on wired at the router (same as on the modem).

It seems, that I'm having an issue with the router talking to the modem; acting like a bad cable or something (but I've tried 5 different cables; same result on all).

Any other ideas?

If your buddy has a similar setup, can you take your router to his place and test it there?

What Rev is his DIR-655?

You can try this: FW Update Process
1. Save a copy of the latest FW file to the PC.
2. Factory reset.
3. Reload the save version of FW using the FW file you downloaded.
4. Factory reset after FW processes.
5. Do a speed test uisng a wired PC with out setting up the router initially. Then try with TS and QoS disabled...

yah; I need to try swapping routers with my buddy to see if mine asks up within his environment; our schedules just haven't aligned yet.


Regarding the firmware; i'm all the way up to date on 1.37NA; are you saying I should do a factory reset then update the firmware again?

I have done a factory reset then tested the wired speed before putting my settings back onto the router; same issue with 10mb down on wired out of the router.

did the above; no improvement; I'm still stuck with 10mb down when I should be getting 60+mb out of the router as the modem is getting 65mb

Can you get this router to your friends house to see if the problem follows?

Yes in regards to TS & QoS

I haven't been able to sync with my buddy yet; but I have a pair of current hardware rev 655's arriving today (for a different install location).  I'm going to try one of those and see if I get any different result.

"my guess" is that I'm having some odd hardware or software issue on the WAN port on of the Rev A 655.

I'll post more intel tonight after the hardware arrives

Sounds good. I'll check my A4 as well. I think it worked well on my 50/3 however it's using v1.21 I think and it's never been updated and I use a Motorola SB 6180 modem.

so I dropped in a brand new dir-655 hardware version C1; firmware version 3.00

out of the router wired I'm getting 65mb down; out of wireless I'm getting speeds in the upper twenty's to mid forties down depending upon the device (all is working as expected)

so I have something wanky with the hardware version A dir-655; odd very odd

Possible something HW wise maybe hosed on the rev A. Won't know maybe until you can test it out at a different location.
