While your at it...?
« on: June 24, 2009, 09:53:49 AM »

I know that there's all kinds of issues with the 1.20/21 firmware update, and that Dlink is working on a new firmware that will save us all. I was just wondering if there any way that you could pull the defective firmware off of the available downloads list so people like me who update without reading first don't get themselves into trouble.  :)   I guess I didn't expect Dlink to knowingly distribute a faulty product. Secondly, could you try to make the new F/W have an option to keep the display on at all times, instead of the auto-off after 15 seconds or whatever it is?

Thanks

Fully support you.  Although I have upgraded my DGL-4500 to v1.20 and then v1.21beta01.  I also wish D-Link should remove the download links of these problematic firmware (also for DIR655, etc.).  This is to prevent more D-Link routers owners go into hell with these new firmware.

As lots of people have mentioned this with the display, I'm going to have to give you a big fat "NO!".  Simply because it is an OLED, and it WILL fade very quickly IF left on.  So, unless you want a dead screen, then this cannot happen.

I agree with the idea of pulling the faulty firmwares.

I imagine that they don't have an option to leave the display on all the time because OLED(the type of display on the DGL4500) have a comparitively short life span.  If the display were on all the time, I'd guess the display would burn out before the warranty.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the next firmware update has minimal issues, but I won't hold my breath.  I wasn't having the issue most people were having with the WAN becoming unresponsive, because the router restarts itself about once every 24 hours.  It has always restarted about once a day since the day I got it, with firmware 1.02.  :(

Sounds like you should call d-link directly and ask them to replace your router as it sounds defective.  I remember when I first got it that if I tried to load a rtsp page that it would reboot.  I'm so frustrated with it that I'm seriously considering buying a new router to replace it and filing a complaint with the state of FL about how d-link is responding with repeatedly bad firmware updates for this product.

Hi weoh,

I also had the similar problem as yours.  When my DGL-4500 run v1.15, due to I have no computer use wireless, only Wii, PSP, Buffalo Link Theater use 802.11g, NDSL uses 802.11b but all rarely use the networking, so I've tried disable the Wireless configuration.   Then I found my DGL4500 reboots automatically every hour.  Until I re-enable the Wireless (no matter I choose mixed n/g/b, n/g, g/b or only n, g, b), the router has no more reboot problem.

I found that 1.16b corrected that problem with the radio having to be enabled.  It was worlds better than the current batch of fw and would run for weeks w/o a reboot but it did have high error counts and dropped tx packets.

Is there any updates on what Dlink is doing regarding the A1 information that was provided to them? In addition, I have Fios internet rated at 25mbps download and 15mbps upload. However, I usually get almost 26 down and 24mbps up on speed tests.

Every now and then my speeds would slow down DRAMATICALLY. I would get 5 to 8 mbps per second. Verizon mentioned that it is not a bandwidth issue or congestion issue on my end. I would reboot the router and the same poor speeds. As soon as I switched back to Verizon's actiontech router, I was getting full download speeds again. Something is seriously borked with this dgl-4500. I downgraded the firmware from 1.21 to 1.20 and now my speeds are back to normal. However, I have to keep checking on it throughout the day. This is annoying.

In addition, A fellow Fios member set up a temporary server on his end and he put up a speedtest file so I can download it. I was able to download with both the DGL-4500 and Verizon's Actiontech router. He wanted to analyze packets. In the end, the graph for the actiontech was pretty smooth and the graph for the dgl-4500 router was all over the place.

I actually have a capture file using wireshark while I was downloading a speedtest file. It is pretty bad.

Actually I received a pm from lycan a few hours ago and he informed me that he's shipping me an a2 to replace my a1.  He needs a1's for testing.

Interesting.. Are they any hardware differences between the A1 and A2? I'm not familiar with the revisions.
