My Dir-655 is having issues with IP address
« on: December 25, 2014, 01:36:17 PM »

When I connected my new Dir-655 to my cable modem I get issues where my IP address to the internet is incorrect and shows me in another state some 800 miles away. This is causing connection issues to any website after about 5 minutes.

My modem will show the proper IP address, but the D-link shows another, and not the 192 but a regular IP address, just the wrong one.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

You might try a FW reload, factory reset, load v2.11, then factory reset.
Also you might try the ISP modem is router mode then place the 655 into the DMZ on the modem and test...

Is Qos Enabled, It should be disabled.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn OFF DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.

The problem is the modem is using 1 ip address to connect to the internet but the router is using another and they are conflicting and I am unable to change it. I downgraded to 2.10 with no change. If you use the IP the modem is using it will show the correct one. Use the one the router is using and it shows 800 miles away. Connect the modem directly to the computer and both ipv4 and ipv6 connect properly and everything is perfect.

Connect the router and nothing works properly.

Change the DIR router to 192.168.1.2 or .0.254 while ISP modem is in router mode or bridged.

Change the DIR router to 192.168.1.2 or .0.254 while ISP modem is in router mode or bridged.

Changed it, why would the default gateway IP be incorrect as well?

Also it did not fix the problem

ISP Modems can use the same IP address as some external routers 192.168.0.1 or .1.1.

If the ISP Modem is running in router mode, you should be able to connect the 655 to the ISP modem and set up the IP address it gets from the ISP Modem into the DMZ on the modem and test...

I have noticed that some applications I have used before with the 655 sometimes, not always, report wrong locations, however seem to correct themselves. I've wondered what causes this. I don't know if it's a router thing, DNS or a combination of router, DNS and application.  ???

Let us know what your tests results are with ISP Modem in router mode using DMZ.

What application or where are you seeing this 800 miles distance location at?

When i use the whatismyip.com or any speed tests. DMZ seems to be working although a few sites will not load such as Gmail. I take that back, gmail is now working and the IP is now correct. Seems to have fixed the problem.

Ok, possible ISP modem/DIR-655 configuration. Should work well now.

Enjoy.  ;)

Its rather stupid that you have to go through all the hassle just to make it work when putting the modem/router in bridge mode, plug it into port 1 and reboot the router and modem should just work. But nope, it gets all messed up.

Port 1 on the ISP modem or the DIR router? If the ISP Modem is bridge, the port used on the DIR should be the Internet port. I presume that the ISP modems Port #1 should be used however not sure. I would review the User Manual to see what exactly which port should be used on the ISP Modem when Bridge mode is enabled.

I used the port 1 from the isp modem to the internet port on the router as is instructed by the modem's manual

Seems I got it to work by downgrading the Firmware to 2.07. Strange but it works now. The router is now properly using IPV6 for all devices on the network and so far no sites have stopped working.

Will let you know if anything changes.
