DLINK 655 resets itself multiple times each day
« on: January 15, 2015, 08:35:59 PM »

Hardware Version: A2
Firmware Version: 1.37NA

My DIR 655 will disconnect/reset the network (BOTH wired LAN and Wifi) multiple times each day.  I have both wired machines and wireless experience this intermittent downtime when the router resets itself.

I've noticed this issue for some time but it's gotten worse since I updated to 1.37NA.  I updated as I was having issues with my Nest thermostat disconnecting from Wifi.

I've followed the firmware upgrade steps listed here http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0, in an attempt to resolve this issue.  I did a factory reset, flashed the firmware 1.37NA (same that I have installed), another factory reset, then uploaded my previously saved configuration settings.  I performed these steps around 8:15PM (CST) and the DIR 655 has already reset since then (!), so it didn't correct the problem.

I'm logging the DIR 655 to a remote syslog server so am capturing the exact times the devices goes down.  There doesn't seem to be a timing correlation as far as I can tell.

Ideas??  Any suggestions would be appreciated!  :)

Link>Welcome!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

There maybe some incompatibility between this older generation router and the NESTs.

If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Disable any additional WiFi on the modem as well...If possible

Wifi is disabled on the modem and has been since the beginning.  The DIR 655 is configured as a DMZ device on the modem.

The problem isn't really with the Nest, that's a red herring here.  The issue is my DIR 655 resets itself several times each day, not really a Wifi connectivity issue per se.  All of my devices are fine individually.  But this intermittent reset is impacting my ability to do reliable backups and other activities.

I'm using WPA2/AES only.  No cordless phones or other Wifi routers.

Is there a way to get DEBUG level logs out of the DIR 655?  It'd be nice to know if there's a specific event or chain of events causing the reset, then we could home on in the culprit causing this issue (and possibly resolve a firmware bug).

ID turn OFF ALL WiFi devices. Start with one of them and test. Graduate turning on each device and check the router behavior.

I'd also disable the WiFi radio on the router and test to see if the router reboots there as well. Connect up wired LAN computers and test.

Reboots are usually a misconfiguration of the router, bad WiFi signal or external interferences.

Not a bad strategy, except I have ~15 Wifi devices (not all simultaneously on the network, but at various times), including smartphones, laptops, IP cameras, smart outlets, thermostat, etc.  Plus a couple of wired LAN devices as well.  I'd happily troubleshoot these one-by-one, except I can't reliably reproduce the condition that causes the router to reset.  In fact, my DIR 655 just went 2 days 7 hours without a reset.  Since then it's reset twice in the last hour.  On Jan 15 in the morning, it reset 3 times within a 15 minute time span, according to the device logs on my syslog server.  How can I get more granular logs to determine the state of the device prior to a reset?  DEBUG level logging is really what I need here.  This would help me pinpoint if it's a particular device interfering or other condition present in the router that could be correlated to the reset.

If it's stable for a period of time then reboots, this is a symtom of interferences i think.
Any other WiFi routers in the area?  Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.

This is not a problem of the router rather the router maybe trying to find a clear and open channel to use.

I've got 3 versions of the router and all 3 work well. However I only have a few other WiFi neighbors in my area and maybe have 10 WiFi devices...

I do see a lot of wireless access points from my neighbors, 3 currently besides my own.  I used OS X Wireless Diagnostics tool (http://www.computerworld.com/article/2476307/mac-os-x/os-x-mavericks--using-apple-s-hidden-wi-fi-diagnostics-tool.html) to view area networks.  I'll try and switch to a different channel and see if that helps.  Thanks.

Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11.

I've set my DIR 655 to a manual channel of 6 and will update with the results.

No luck, the DIR 655 just reset itself, twice in the last couple hours.
