Can no longer connect to my DNS 323 on my network
« on: April 09, 2015, 07:23:30 PM »

I have a D-Link DNS-323 and a MacBook Pro I use to send files back and forth wirelessly. I've had this DNS-323 for several years and it's worked well. Every once in a while I would lose connection from my MacBook Pro and need to shut the DNS-323 down, and restart. Once I restart, I've always been able to connect back to the DNS 323 until now.

Now I can't seem to get any connection over my network. I've tried to shut it down completely (several times), unplug it, turn it back on, but can't get the connection back. I've tried going to the default IP Address of 192.168.0.32, but I just get an error message after my browser times out.

I also tried to go to http://http://www.dlink-xxxxxx (xxxxxx is the last 6 digits of my DNS-323 Mac ID). Browser couldn't find any page at that location.

Any other suggestions to try and get the connection back between my DNS-323 and my wireless network?

My DNS-323:
H/W Ver. B1 F/W Ver.: 1.04 (not sure if I ever updated the firmware)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Some things to check and try.

Are the LEDs on the ethernet ports of the DNS-323 and router port it is connected to lit?  No LEDs could mean a dud port or a damaged or insecure connection of the cable.

Have you tried a new cable between the NAS and router and tried different ports on the router?

Have you tried another computer or used a cable between your router and your Mac, that is assuming you have lit LEDs as above?

Have you tried a direct cable connection between your computer and the NAS?  If the Mac doesn't have an ethernet port try to borrow a computer that does.  This test will show if the NAS ethernet port is working or not (you may need to check up on using a fixed IP address on the computer.

Have you changed anything on your network?  The main thing here is the router as a new one may be on a different subnet so that the IP address of the NAS does not 'fit' with IP addresses supplied by the router DHCP server.

All those questions are based on what we have seen in our service department over the years.

Thanks for the suggestions Ivan!

I don't believe there is any type of light at the Ethernet port of the DNS-323. If there is suppose to be, nothing is lit in the back of the unit by the Ethernet port. The router does have an indicator light where the Ethernet from the DNS-323 is connected to the router.

I do have three LED lights at the font. A light in the middle (power light?) and a light on each side of the middle light for each of the two drives. The middle light is solid blue. Both lights on the right and left for the drives are blinking blue.

I tried changing the Ethernet cable, but that didn't change anything.

I connected an Ethernet cable from the DNS-323 to a Windows laptop. I opened a browser and went to 192.168.0.32, but I got a "this page can't be displayed message".

I haven't changed anything in my network for a while (the DNS-323 has been working since the most recent network changes a year ago or so).

Anything else to try?

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in replying.

You are correct, the DNS-323 does not have the link and act LEDs on the ethernet port but the fact the router ports LEDs for the NAS are lit indicates the port is live.

Not being up to speed with the Mac and utility programs available for it I will have to fall back on those utilities we use on clients windows machines.

First, download a copy of Netscan by SoftPerfect (it is free and has both 32 bit and 64 bit programs in the zip file).

Needless to say this has to be opened on your windows notebook (just double click on the netscan.exe 32 or 64 bit, it does not need installing).  In the Range From boxes use 192.168.0.1 To 192.168.0.255 and then clivk on Start Scanning.  This will find everything that is active on your network.  If your DNS-323 does not show up the last thing to try is a factory reset using the reset button at the back of the unit (this will not touch any data but will clear ant group and individual settings).

If that doesn't do anything then it is time to check your backup and possibly take the unit to a repair shop and have them check the power supply for voltage under load and for possible dry joints on the ethernet socket of the unit.  Regarding the power supply, read the last couple of posts on the Is it...dead? thread under this one.

First - the DNS-323's ethernet port link & activity LEDs are combined into one LED on the front panel - it's in between the disk LEDs if it's lit there is a link pulse on the port, and if it is flashing there is activity on the port.

Second - it is not enough to have a link light at just one end - that just means one side is seeing a link pulse, it IS possible to have one of the two pairs in the cable broken, in which case the link light will be on at one end and there will be no data transfer.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
