Losing Internet connection for 30 seconds to 5 minutes
« on: July 02, 2009, 06:54:39 PM »

I purchased my DIR-655 in April 2008.  It worked fine until April 2009.  It is used to provide a solid connection and provide multiple IP addresses for a virtual server used in my application.  When the connection is lost, the application must be taken down and restarted - 20 minutes lost.  I had to run out Easter Sunday morning (in the rain) to buy a Belkin router in order to get back up and running.  I contacted D-Link and they sent me a replacement DIR-655 which worked fine until this week.  The Belkin router is back up and running as a replacement.  I have called my ISP (AT&T) to complain about their DSL service.  Every time they tested the line and found it supplying a signal within specs.  Since the Belkin router has been my only router, I have had no problem with losing internet connection.  That leads me to believe the router has a problem.  The latest firmware version is installed - 1.31  I set the modem (A Motorola 2210) in bridge mode for the DIR-655.  The Belkin does not run with the modem in bridged mode.  Has anyone had a similar experience or suggestions on what could be the problem?

Possible sources of the problem.
NAT table set too low.
IP release times set too high.
Router underpowered.
The first two can be fixed by D-link in future firmware updates.
Better yet, buy a router that uses open source firmware like the Linksys wrt54gl. Then install DD-WRT, or Tomato, or Openwrt.
Problems solved.

@GullyFoyle: Why don't you go play on the DD-WRT forum?

You're truly trolling this forum with your personally motivated attacks on the DIR.

I thought I would give the DIR-655 one more try.  By the way, the hardware version is A4.  I tried various options mentioned in the 'router freezes' forum.  I reset it to factory defaults.  It is behaving worse than before.  I get an Internet connection for a few seconds to a minute then nothing for five.  Since this is a replacement router, I'm not sure if D-Link support will even talk to me about this issue.  I'll see what they have to say.

Try this:

Reset to default, reflash firmware, setup clean manually.

Update... may be fixed.  Called D-Link RMA Dept, Level 3 support.  Spoke with Carol.  She had me go to Advanced, Advanced Network and change the WAN Port Settings from AUTO to 100Mbps.  Seems to be working now.  I'll give it a week and then update.

Yep, that's probably cause no 3 for failing connections. 'Auto' settings are never to be trusted.

:( Well, the fix did not last.  My DIR-655 crashed and burned this afternoon.  Internet was there, then it wasn't, then it was there, then it wasn't.  During this time I could never access the router itself.  Now D-Link is supposed to send me my third router via RMA.  I may just give up and keep the Belkin up and running.  It has given me NO trouble.  The UPS fees sending this stuff back may be the deciding factor.

There is an app you can get called PRTG Network Monitor, you can set it to ping Google every 60 seconds and it will provide you a list of network drops and their duration.  We had the same problem and determined it was not the server, or router, even though our ISP did do a network test, every time they tested the problem did not occur.  This is a good tool to record the problem you are having.

Received my replacement (third) router from D-link a couple of weeks ago.  So far it has been solid as a rock for the last 10 days.  This is additional proof that it was the router and not the internet connection that was failing.  I hope this is my LAST router.

this happened to me...internet connection keeps dropping...and the log shows a deauthentication received messagge...i disabled anything that had to do with security but to no avail.

Then i remembered that when i installed my Windows 7, i updated the generic Windows 7 driver for my wireless network adapater with the Windows Vista driver that came with my Laptop.

What i  did was to uninstall the wireless network adapter and checked the delete the driver and booted up again. Windows 7 again installed its generic driver and voila my dropping problem is gone.

Third router is now giving me trouble.  It was fine for 3 or 4 weeks.  Monday, August 10th it locked up and I could not access the web interface.  Status LED on solid, not blinking as it should.  I cycled the power and the router came back up and worked fine until this morning.  It locked up again.  I never touched the modem; just cycled the power on the router.  I called D-Link support.  They seemed ready to send me my fourth router, but then had second thoughts.  They said I need to speak with a higher level support person who does not work on weekends.  I will give him a call on Monday to see what they are willing to do.  Each time it costs me around $8 to send the broken router back to them in addition to the hours I spend on the phone describing all the problems.  This is clearly a router problem.  It came with H/W Ver: A4 and F/W Ver: 1.21.  Since it worked without a problem for a few weeks, I decided not to upgrade the firmware.

I have to agree with GullyFoyle.  My DIR-655 A2 had the same behaviors.  I seriously stuck with that router longer than I should have.

No firmwares ever fixed anything, just made things worse.

Had a WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT for about 3 months now.  A LOT less headaches.

I still used my DIR-655 as a Gigabit switch for about a month.  It died.  Tried a different power adapter and no lights would come on.

I spent $150 for that router brand new.  It's in my home.  We seriously didn't wear it out in 2 years.

I spent $35 5 years ago on a Network Everywhere router from Wal-Mart that is still humming along right now.  $50 on my WRT54GL.  If BOTH of those died right now, I could buy them again and still have spent less money than the DIR-655.

Ebay would be a great place to give those units to someone who has spare time to tinker with shoddy firmware and useless setup screens.  Personally, I like being able to use my network equipment without constant interruption from BASIC functions.

Laters!

Oh, and have you seen how many 5 egg reviews there are for the Linksys routers?  Dwarfs the D-Links considerably.
