Needs some help.  Just bought a 890l and hooked it up yesterday.  Everything I thought was great.  Love it, but upon further review it seems that I have certain devices (3 pc's and iPhone6) connecting to the 2.4 channel and can't seem to get above an average of 15-30 Mbps down.  I have a max of 62 that all my 5ghz devices get.  Now I started to think I had a bad 2.4 card in the router but here is what throws that theory off.  My Alienwarem17r3 and 17 connect at 2.4 and yet still can get the 62.  (I turned off the 2 5ghnz bands to test this).   I'm at a loss here.  Is there some limitation on the 890l to max dl speeds?   

My friend, who bought a 890l a few days ago and recommended it to me, seems to also have this issue.   His is a little more obvious because he has a 300 Mbps download speed and yet 2.4 devices are getting only 20-ish and the 5ghz see the full speed. 

Also, the upload speed is ALWAYS max for any 2.4 devcie.  Mine at 6 up and my friends at 22 up.  Only seems to affect download.

Any thoughts?   I can't believe that him and I both bought defective routers with the same problem or that this is something that can't be a defect. lol.

So the Alienware device gets the correct download speed and the other devices do not? I presume this maybe a device issue and not a router issue. Not all devices can attain max Download speeds. You'll need to refer to the MFr for support and device spec information.

Its not really recommended to speed test via WiFi due to many variables that can cause inaccurate results....Mfr wireless device design and support will be a factor.  We don't recommend speed testing over WiFi as a default test due to issues like this and many other factors and variables that lead to inaccurate results. Testing over wired LAN cables for default speed tests is preferred. Do wired LAN cable tests and see what the speeds are first.
 

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

What wireless adapters are installed on the PCs and what iOS is loaded on the iPhones?
I have an iPhone 6P and use iOS 8.4.

• Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
• Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
• If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
• For routers with Smart Connect Technology , try disabling this feature and test. Under Wireless.

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Hi Furry.  Thanks for the reply.  My previous router was a linksys e4200. Has dual band.  All devices on 2.4 and 5 were able to get the max speeds. I reconnected it last night just to check again and everything was great with the old linksys in the speeds department.  I just can't figure out what's up with my 890l and the fact my friends is doing the same makes me worry that for some reason supposed to be like this which wouldn't make sense.  I updated the firmware to 1.07 when I got it Tuesday. Then after I noticed the issues, I checked the firmware and saw 1.08 was out and upgraded to that. Problem still persisted. I checked the drivers on the computers having the issue and their up to date even though I don't think that's an issue because of fact it's happening to my iPhone 6 and its newer technology and its not like I can't change settings on it like driver options. 

I'm located in NA (NC).  I'm ising default settings and only changed the wifi name and password initially.  I have tried turning off sc like I mentioned in my previous post so that I could play with just the 2.4 band and its settings.  I've tried using different channels and only using 20hz. Nothing changes. Still limited download and yet full upload. 

Are you able to get full speeds with your 2.4 band on the 890l?

Last time I check I got my 50/3...However I was using a different FW version and I haven't checked in a while. I'm currently testing a different model router however I have to change back to the 890L so I'll run some test this evening and check again.

Are the wired speeds ok?

There will be differences between older Linksys HW and newer D-Link HW so there maybe some issues seen.

My iPhone is using 8.3. Non jail broken.  I'll have to get you a list of the wifi adapters on the kthers tonight. I should also mention that my xbox one when connected to the 2.4 channel is also getting limited.   But have no idea why both my Alienware laptops can connect and not get limited.

I was hard wired with only one computer when I first set it up and upgraded the firmware.  After moving the problem yesterday I was on wifi when I upgraded the firmware.  I did one factory reset last night but can't remember if it was before or after that last firmware upgrade.  Didn't fix the issue though.  I will follow the steps in your link on upgrading the firmware again tonight and let you know how that goes.  I'll just put 1.08 back on over itself.  I have wondered if I should see about fining a pre 1.07 fw and downgrade mine to see if that helps.

Ok keep us post. Please use only wired LAN cable to do any FW updates. Wireless can present problems.

You can try to downgrade and see if the problem persists.
It is interesting that your Alienware gets to spec however nothing else does. Possible issue with iOS. I'm on iOS 8.4 and JBd. I'll test this again this evening.

Let us know the specs of the wireless adapters in the PCs including the Alienware too.

So it's rush hour here where I'm at and I didn't have SC eabled so I could test 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz separately with my iPhone.
I saw 44Mb on 2.4Ghz and 33Mb on 5Ghz. Does seem a bit lower than I saw before. 

Wired Mac Mini was full on 50+Mb:


ALL upload testing was 3Mb accross the board.

Test with SC enabled however that will result in a 5Ghz radio connection on the iPhone = 33Mb was the result.

I connected my Mac Mini OSX 10.10.4 via wireless and go full speed: Connected on N mode, 324Mps, Channel 36


I switched SC off and selected Single N mode and iPhone still reported 33Mb and the Mac Mini reported a full 50Mb. 

I looked back in my photo history and found a iphone speed test run from June 6th which shows I captured something that was at full ISP speed 50/3. I'll look to see what FW version I had at that time. I believe it would have been v1.06 which it was from looking at the release dates on the web.

Thought I found a fix but it didn't help. Lol. I might try and look for the 1.06 firmware version and downgrade it to see if that helps. Let you know.

Seems to be the firmware. I can get full speeds on 1.06 on all my devices on 2.4 that are limited on 1.07 and 1.08.  No idea why this is.

I realize this might be from out in left field but I wonder if it has something to do with how the router talks to the cards in the devices effected.  I mentioned my 2 Alienwares get full speed on 2.4.  Now the only thing different about those are that the cards have 2 antennas whereas the others only have 1 antenna.  Other than that I can't figure out what the last 2 firmwares are doing to cause problems.

I reverted to v1.06 and retested with my iphone and now getting full ISP speeds 50/3. Something may have changed in follow on versions.
