I working in a broadcaster compagny, and experience told me that you must backup everything before perform any change, so litle the change are. 1 % risk are too High for me. The UPS protect you, but it Still a gadget that can failled ( it faill me once at work fiew years ago).
I dont think you Will face any problems, but loose 1 night of automatic backup "just in case" are acceptable.

For my case, i use Ext3 for the security of the journaling.

I have at least three copies of current data, my two NAS units are synchronized every two days.  One of them is in the basement in a cinder block enclosure to add protection from a possible fire.  I also have a Mozy on-line backup account that backs up My Documents continuously.

I don't think I'll be losing that data. ;)

Maybe a slightly different question, but assuming the v1.08 general availability release is imminent.  Does anyone think there is a big chance of data loss on the existing formatted drives (assuming no configuration changes like changing the file system type, etc.) in upgrading the firmware from the current v1.08 beta to the generally available version?

I just installed my NAS and am waiting to put my current files on it until either the GA firmware is released, or I feel like the risk is minimal.  Would like to just dump everything on the new DNS-323 though so I can dismantle my old system...
