Backup to USB drive: Speed?
« on: February 10, 2016, 07:24:11 AM »

I'm just running my first backup to an external HDD (via rsync under ffp, not via the builtin backup function), connected via an USB3 to SATA cradle (Sharkoon). It's now almost finished after about 24 hours for 738 GB, giving a speed of somewhat between 8 and 9 MB/s. Is that to be expected or is this uncommonly slow and I should investigate whether there's a problem?

What speeds do other folk who backup to an external HDD get?

This is actually useless. It really takes a long time and no indicator for me.
It is actually faster to backup from the network esp you have gigabit connections.
I believe USB backup is only  less than 2MB/sec.

I agree, if your needing good back and speed to do it, get into some Gb networking and connect the DNS and the PCs to the external Gb switch and do your back ups that way. USB is only good up to a certain point and not great for fast xfer speeds. Use USB for small file xfers and some small streaming and such.

Thanks for your replies! To be clear, the backup speed is totally adequate for my purpose: I plan to use this to do monthly backups of the DNS-320L to store away from home. While the initial backup ran ~24 hours, subsequent increments should involve less data transfer and thus should well be able to run overnight. I actually prefer that to a network based solution that would force me to leave some computer running while the backup is transferring.

So, I was not actually looking for a way to speed things up but just wanted to know whether the speed I observed was as expected or whether it was a sign of a potential problem. I take your replies as a hint towards the former.

@redpiyaya: As stated, the backup speed was roughly 8.5 MB/s - not fast, but definitely above 2MB/s.

For the record: I just ran the first incremental update to my "off-site backup" disk. Took ~68 minutes for ~32 GB. Seems like a workable solution to me...
