Hi all,
today my DNS320L fail both drives. Drive fail without any info on logs. Both leds become amber and I was not able to seen RAID status from web interface.
I removed a disk from the bay and I tried to mount on my linux PC.
Gparted shown the following partition table:

output is the same on both disks.
Obviusly my linux PC is not able to mount these disks.
I've tried also on Windows using  DiskInternals LiNux Reader, situation is almost the same but, from this tool, I can see a linux raid but is not readable.

Any chance to recovery data from hard drive?

A few points.
1)  What type of RAID array were the disks in RAID 0, RAID 1?
2)  How did you try to mount them on your Linux PC, direct connection to the motherboard or did you use a USB/SATA adapter/caddy?
3)  What brand and size are the disks?
4)  When did you make your last tested backup?
5)  Why did you use Gparted rather than the standard file viewer?

I can't even hazard a guess as to what is going on with your disks because we have never seen anything like the layout you are showing on any of the disks we have worked on from any D-Link nas boxes.

Another point, we always use a USB/SATA adapter to connect disks we are working on to our Linux test computer for the simple reason it does not mess with the partitioning of the computer (something that could give the results you are seeing).

Hi,
1) Disks are configured in RAID 1. On both now I see the same partition table
2) I tried to mount on Linux because files were not accessible via file manager, web interface,  SMB mount etc. Normally I mounted volume using smb. Before the fault I tried to mount the volume but, unexpectly, the unit was unreacheable because was off. I booted the unit and I worked it normally. During normal operation unit stops to work. When I checked Volume from web interface both disks were offline, leds were amber and RAID seems not configured. At this stage all files were not accessible using NAS, so I decided to use an USB caddy and check one disk on my PC. Ubuntu was not able to mount automatically and filesystem was reported damaged, I tried also on Windows with same result.
3) Disks are Western Digital Green WD20EZRX 2TB
4) I accessed NAS in read/write till few minutes before the fault.
5) I used Gparted only to check the partition table becuyse both Linux and Windows reports the filesystem unaccesible. I was astonished to seen that filesystem was marked as swap area.

Some notes:
a) Gparted was used only to check the consistency of partition table, My first guess was that the whole partition table was damaged but I verified that all other partitions are normal
b) NAS is set for RAID autorecovery, So I suppose a bad recovery of a damaged disk, i.e. NAS was off for a power fault that generate also a fault of a disk, when unit comes up autorecovery started but it syncronized the wrong disk on the good one. Could be reasonable?
c) Is there any that I can check to verify it?

 OK, with RAID 1 both disks should be the same so put one away safely and we will see if you can recover your data from the other one.

Just a bit of information.  I asked my people if they had ever seen a Linux swap partition on any of the drives on any of our NAS boxes and the answer is no.

The first thing you need to equip yourself with is a USB/SATA adapter or caddy with an external power supply (for large drives the external powers supply is essential) if yours doesn't have one.  That allows the computer to boot without messing with the drive.  The least contact of the computer operating system with the drive the better.

Since you have a Linux computer it should be easy for you to plug in the USB mounted drive and use a file browser to find out what is there, just make sure you have enough space on the computer drive or another USB drive to store recovered files (that assumes that the data on the drive isn't a write off.

Another thing you should do is download the disk manufacturers disk tools and run them against the disk to check for problems.  If the one drive passes all the manufacturers disk tests check the other one and if it passes replace then in your NAS and reformat as RAID 1 and restore either from your last backup or from any data you managed to recover.

Also try and find out why there was a power fault as it could happen again.
