DNS-320L Remote backup to another DNS-320L
« on: April 06, 2016, 12:58:35 AM »

Hi There,

Recently purchased a second DNS-320L so I could backup my primary DNS-320L. Both are running 1.06. I have 650gig of data on the primary I want to backup to my backup nas which has 1.6T of free space.

I have enabled the remote backup server option on the backup NAS and setup a new Remote Backup job on the primary NAS. The primary NAS is seeing the backup nas with no issues and the backup starts and runs for a while.

The issue I am having is.. the backup never finishes correctly. The progress bar seems to go to 99% after about 10 minutes, and only a few hundred gigabytes get backed up. The backup on the primary just goes back to Ready. If I connect to the backup NAS, I can see it's only got a small amount of the data that needs to be backed up. It's totally unreliable.

Any ideas? Many thanks

Let me start by saying we don't have the 'L' version but we do have a lot if the normal DNS-320 boxes and half of them are used as backups for the other half as well as some DNS-323 boxes.

Now a few questions.
1)  how are the drives in both of your boxes setup?
2)  what type of connection do you have between the boxes (gigabit switch, router, etc)?
3)  how much data are you attempting to backup (everything or specific directories)?

I ask these questions because we regularly backup over 1TB of data without any problems during the weekly backup of our clients backups.  All our NAS boxes are connected to the network through a gigabit 48 port managed switch and we have never seen what you are seeing, but then we never watch the process, only confirm the results after the event.  In fact having setup the backup job we just let it happen.

Thanks.

The primary NAS has 2 x 1TB drives in RAID 1 config.
The backup NAS has 1 x 1Tb drive and 1 x 750Gb drive in a JBOD configuration.
Both nas boxes are currently plugged into the same gigabit network switch and I'm attempting to backup just over 600gig. The network also consists of a Fortigate gateway and dual wans. One is an ADSL line with a generic provider supplied router, the second is a D-link 4G router. The two NAS drives have the Fortigate as their default gateway, but the internal to internal rules are any allow.
Primary nas has Volume1, then under that several shares, for example "Shared Data", "iTunes Library", "Photos" "Videos" etc.
The backup nas just has Volume1 with no shares other than the Volume1 share.
The NAS to NAS backup source is set to the primary Volume1 level. This way it will backup all my shares. The destination is set to Voulme1 on the backup NAS. The options are set to not encrypted and ignore existing files is set.

The primary see's the backup fine, and does actually back up to it, but it never finishes all the files. The first time I ran the backup, it copied one root folder and all it's contents, then stopped. The second time it copied 3 root folders and their contents. I ran it again and it started copying the 4th root folder. Some times it doesn't appear to copy anything new, other times it seems to copy loads. I'm not convinced every directory it does appear to have backed up contains all the files. The backup nas holds nothing other than the backup from the primary and shows 252Gb used, so well short of where it's supposed to be.
Each time I run the backup it seems to spend a very long time not doing anything that I can see. When it stops it just goes back to Ready with no errors or indication on what was/was not done.

Same problem for me and for a friend
Me : DNS320 and DNS320L (all with lastest firmware)
See there : http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=63213.msg260501#msg260501

Friend : DNS320L and DNS320L
Same.

It would be great to have a email option for backups.
