Time warner with D link 655
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:45:59 AM »

Hi,

Today Time Warner came and set up their modem at my apartment. I have a D link 655 that I plugged into the modem but for some reason it's telling me that it can't detect the internet from the modem.

Currently I'm running the internet just fine straight from the cable modem to my computer but when I run to the router and then an ethernet cord from the router to my computer it still won't work.

I've also reset the router and done a reinstall but it just won't detect the modem. I've also manually typed in the MAC address on the back of the modem but with no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Shawn

Unplug the power from the modem and unplug power from the 655.  Make sure the ethernet cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN port of the router.  Plug in the modem and let it full power up, then power up the router.  Go to the configuration page of the router and make sure the Internet setup is for DHCP.  You shouldn't have to do anything special for Time Warner Cable, you shouldn't need to do any MAC address cloning for it to work properly.

I'll press reset on the D link just to be safe. Get it back to factory. I will follow these guidelines and post results

Ok I have the router working when the ethernet cord runs from the router to my computer.

It cannot acquire a wireless address though. If I unplug the ethernet cord from my computer then it just sits in "acquiring network address" limbo for forever.

So essentially I am getting internet through the router but not wirelessly.

Any tips?

EDIT: I have set the wireless up to Manual using a 10 digit WEP output. When trying to connect wirelessly I am stuck at "verifying identity" just like when I'm stuck at "acquiring network address"

What adapter are you using?  You may need to clear your wireless profile out on the client PC, as it may have some encryption settings or something.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by adapter... How would I go about that?

Yes. I have it set up to put out a WEP under "Savage Dlink" with a 10 digit passcode. I can see the Savage Dlink network when viewing network connections and I can connect using the passcode. While connecting it sticks on the "Verifying identity" and never stops.

Previously, before set up for WEP (and I realize it's not optimal but for my set up I prefer WEP) it would do the same but get stuck at "Acquiring network address"

I have set up the internet where I can get online if it's set to unsecured. Now I'm trying to secure it
