After several years of excellent service my 835 appears somewhat dead. Out of nowhere it stopped receiving internet from my modem. The Wifi radios work fine as I can get the signal from my phone everywhere around the house as I normally would, but no internet. Gigabit port plugged directly into my PC is also no go. Can't even get to the login page via the PC. I could get to it via wifi from my phone, however.
I tried a factory reset via the phone wifi thinking I'd just start over. No bid deal. However, on reboot the router still isn't seeing that it's connected to the modem or at least it isn't seeing internet from there. The radios come right up. Orange light. I tried resetting (via the button) the modem/router/pc as well. Waited. Changed cables (hey they go bad right?). Reconnected everything. Rebooted everything. Same thing. I called my ISP (Comcast) and verified the signal to the modem was OK. Plugging in my PC directly from the modem restored internet to the PC. So that would rule out a bad modem or lack of internet from there. I'd try a re-flash but I can't even get to there. I'd try applying my saved config too but same thing--can't access it. I tried all of the ports. Tried the quick start CD too. No dice. It wants the internet. I opened the cover to see if there were any obvious problems. I remember a discussion earlier regarding heat problems with this model so I thought it was worth a look. Never did any mods with extra heat sinks. But it looked OK. If there'd been a black spot somewhere on the PCB I wouldn't have bothered to post here but it LOOKS good. That and the radios still work makes me think it could be resurrected.
I'm a wrench turner but the geek in me will simply not allow me to just pitch this thing. I hate getting beat by stuff! It's a thing, it's broken. I must fix it! I've since moved on to another router (nice Linksys 1900WRTACS which rocks everything btw), but I'd like to re-purpose this one as an extender for better range in my yard. The one spot I lack coverage is in the farthest corner near my shed which is naturally one of MY spots! That is, if it can be brought back from the dead. If it's dead it's dead but I tried at least! Appreciate any ideas.
