DIR-842 - Unable to connect when setting as Access Point
« on: July 15, 2016, 02:26:50 AM »

Hi there!

I recently acquired a D-Link DIR-842, and finally took the time to set it up as an access point.

On the wired front, everything seems to be working fine: my computer is connected, and no disconnection reports from other users.

But on the wireless front, as stated in the title, both 2.4 and 5.0 are listed in the networks list of my phone (Android 5), but every time I try to connect, it goes to "Obtaining IP address..." and then back to "Saved", and it loops that way for both bands...
I tried several router settings but it doesn't seem to affect this issue...

I haven't tried with an other device yet, since I only have my phone for now, but I will as soon as possible and let you know how it went.

Thanks in advance for any answer.

[EDIT] Ok, after rebooting my computer, it's not connecting to the router either. It seems that every time I reset the router to factory defaults, and disable DHCP server, my computer is able to connect to the router the first time, but after restarting, it doesn't connect anymore...

Is my unit compromised, or is there some setting I am missing? By the way, I followed this video to set the router: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xK-bhNU1vY

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What is the Mfr and Model# of the main host router?

  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using? Is the main host router out putting wifi as well?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?

Well thank you!

I followed the steps in your last link, and it is now working perfectly fine!

I think my main mistake was that I plugged the ethernet cable from the host into the WAN port on the D-Link router... And after re-watching the video I linked, it is indeed mentioned that the internet port cannot be used. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention...

Anyway, problem solved, so thanks again and have a nice day!
