D-Link 320L cannot connect to new network
« on: August 03, 2016, 02:46:33 PM »

Hello.
I have the following problem. I had the NAS setupped and working for 2 years with 2 WD RED HDDs. Now I wanted to move the NAS to another  location with another router, but I cannot make it appear on the network, nor does the Share center setup exe recognize the drive ( the window stays empty).
What are my options? If I hit reset will it erase the disk drives? After powered on and connected to a router the LAN cable stops blinking and the unit goes to power-save mode. Also the port on the router never lights up. I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP. No clue why is that. Could it be the local area networks have different masks? When connected directly to a PC both ends of the LAN cable keep blinking, but still unit not found.
Thanks for any hints!
Best, G

My first and potentially only suggestion would be

Has your IP address changed?

Hello and thanks.
Which IP address? The local network submask?
The external IP for sure, but here we are still talking for local access and general recognition. I don't know if it is possible to have the previous network 192.168.1.254 and the new ones to be 192.168.0.254? BUT still, isn't the lan port supposed to blink? What can I do for the IP address to check and could that be the sole reason I am not seeing the drive?
Thanks!

Did you give the NAS a fixed IP address?

In the example you give there are two subnets (192.168.1.xxx and 192.168.0.xxx) and they will not work together nor see each other.  Hence my question about fixed IP address.

Have you tried logging on to the webUI using either the default IP address or the fixed IP address if you gave it one?

As a last resort you can do a reset but remember doing that will remove any users and other settings you have made but the data on the drives will remain untouched.

I think I gave it a fixed IP, if that is the default during installation, so I could use FTP if related.
Maybe I will try to bring it back to the old network and try to access it to see what was the IP.
It is good to know that resetting will NOT erase data and I could set it up again. Thanks.
Is there any way to change the subnet/ IP of the NAS without resetting? Or make the router "see" it with the other IP?
Thanks again for your time!

There are ways of resetting the IP address but they require that you know the old one.

There is another thing you can do, assuming that you are allowed to change the IP settings of your new modem/router, and that is set the base IP address to your old subnet of 192.168.1.xxx.  If that isn't possible and you can return to the old network you can then use something like Netscan by SoftPerfect to find the IP address of the NAS.

I went from 192.168.0 to 1 with no problem because I did not fix the IPAdress on the NAS.

You can change the IPAdress with your computer connected to the NAS with a cable. For this, you have to change for the operation the settings of your CARD on your computer.

On Windows, for the IPV4 Protocol, instead of automatic IP adress, you have define an adress like 192.168.0.1 to be in the same lan as your NAS. Because I do not have an english system, I do not know the exact name of the parameters, but you can have an idea loking at this page :

Hope it helps...

Ok...I got my phone connected to the old network and saw the IP address. The new network has same IP range 192.168.1.xxx
I connected the NAS to the PC directly, ran netscan and still didn't see the NAS. I guess I am going to resset the NAS. :(
When in power save mode the LAN cable is NOT blinking when connected directly to the PC.
Hitting the resset, I guess, is the only solution. No idea why it cannot be seen.

When NAS is plugged to the router, the LAN calble on the device and on the router blinks ONLY when the NAS is booting, then it stops...hmm

OK, you may have a different problem than what you thought you had. ;)  We assumed it was a network problem when it could be a hardware problem.

Physically check the unit - mark each disk with its slot position before removing them that way they go back into their original positions.  Now remove the disks and check that there is no physical damage to them and their mounting sockets.  If all is well clean out any dust and fluff before replacing the disks.

Now comes the hard bit, you need to test that the power supply is in fact supplying 12 volts @ 3 Amps.  It is very possible for the power supply to supply 12 volts if there is no load but not when a load is applied.  The initial boot sequence does not require much power but when the disks startup that is when the load is greatest and if the voltage drops to 10v or less things stop working.

We have seen too many power bricks that have been in use 24/7/365 without apparent problems fail when they have been switched off for some time and then switched on again (the problem, in those we have opened for inspection, is the capacitors have dried out and this changes their capacity and ability to work as designed).

There has been some breakthrough just before hitting reset. Changed the network subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 from 255.255.255.0 and I could see the nas with the network utility from Dlink. But I could not mount the volume, nor access it with ftp client nor through browser When I write the strange IP address. I ran setup 1 time, could not remember the admin pass and then it asked me for new, and then again nothing. Tried again to attach it to the router but no signal there...should I try to give it static IP and a "proper" subnet mask manually?
Thanks again for the help.

Ok I did manage to guess my password and give the NAS static IP while connected to my PC. LAN port is blinking, I can access files, change settings...
The IP and the subnet mask are in the same range my router is using to asign with DHCP. When I connect the NAS to the router and NOTHING - no LAN port, no NAS detected in the router pannel.
No ideas how to proceed. the router is a simple HUAWEI HG321f
Thanks!

Try different port on the main host router. Try a different router?
Seems like the port on the DNS is working when directly with your PC. You loose something when connected to this ISP router. I'd try something different. Can install a D-Link DIR series model router with the ISP router...

for some reason the router is not assigning ip to the nas in dhcp mode. for another reason it is not recognized with static ip either... I guess i have to find another router :(
