Can I do this, n on 655 g on 2nd router?
« on: July 18, 2009, 03:40:51 PM »

I have a Linksys media extender which performs better on N. I have some devices which are only g.
I have a spare Linksys router.
Is it possible to run my Linksys router into one of the wired ports on the 655 and make the Linksys g only with the 655 n only? Plus can I use two separate ssid?
I'm not interested in running the 655 in mixed mode, I have had problems before.
Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
Thanks.

Yes, this is possible.

Depending on what model linksys router you can run a 3rd party firmware called dd-wrt.  This firmware has an easy setting to turn it into a access point.  However, some linksys models also have an access point mode out of the box.

Then you would connect it to one of the lan ports on your 655.  There are a couple things you should be aware off.  Depending on what wireless settings you use on the 655, you don't want your wireless G router to interfere with it.  That means you don't want the G router to run on an overlapping wireless channel.

Currently, I run a DIR-825 as my g 2.4ghz router and n only 5ghz router.  I care less about the G router distance, so I its signal power to Low. For G its running on channel 11. Then I am running a cat6e cable to the other side of the room connected to a dir-655.  On that side I have a I am running 40mhz mode on channels 1 and 5.

If your linksys router doesn't support dd-wrt or you don't want t try installing it (it can be somewhat dificult for a novice depending on the model/revision), then you can try this:

Connect to the linksys router, change its ip address to something like 192.168.0.101.  Then log into it again, turn off the firewall, SPI, Qos, basically turn off every feature you can.  Then set your wireless settings that you want.  Now, for the final step, you want to turn off DHCP.  The issue now is you probably can't connect to it.  thats ok.  Now take a cable, plug it into the lan port on the g router and then connect it to your 655.  Give it a second, then log into your 655.  Check to see that its your g router is connecting to the 655 in the dhcp client list.  I would then add a DHCP reservation for that 192.168.0.101 address for the G router.  If it can't be seen going from lan to lan, try the wan port on the G router to the lan port on the 655.  These steps will be similar if your router has an access point mode, except that that mode should disable the firewall and all that stuff for you instead of you have to do it yourself.

Yep I have DDWRT installed. Previously I used the Linksys as a wireless access point for the 655. I've just never wired it to the 655.
When I used it as an access point it had the same ssid as the 655. Is it possible to have separate ssid's for each? I doubt anyone near me has n anything so I can most likely leave that open or invisible.
Is DDWRT still the best way to go, or something like Tomato or Openwrt better ( Simpler)?
Thanks.

Yes, you can have different SSIDs.  I do something like XXXX-5N, XXXX-2N, XXXX-G so people coming over know what to connect to.  It sounds like before you were using it as a bridge, not an access point which you will be using it for now.

Yeah, dd-wrt is still the best.  There is a thread called the pea**** thread at their forums.  You should check that.  It should tell you the best version of the firmware to run for your router, since there have been a lot of important changes since sp1.
