Supporting VoIP?
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:14:36 PM »

I'm upgrading a small office network in a non-profit organization.  The network had 2 LinkSys routers, a BEFSX41 ver2 which we used for VPN passthrough, and an RT31P2 VoIP router with 2 phone ports, plugged into the BEFSX41.  Our 2 line desk phone is plugged into the RT31P2.  We originally had just the VoIP router but couldn't get VPN passthrough to work on it; and I just now failed to get the stuff working on it again.

We have to replace the BESFX41 because it died; and the chosen replacement (since I can't make VPN passthrough work on the VoIP router) is the DIR-628 Rangebooster.  I'm hoping that the 628 will also handle our VoIP requirements (we use Vonage) - but I haven't actually seen the box, one of the non-profit officers found it on sale at Fry's.  Can someone advise me whether this is feasible, or whether we have to keep the old LinkSys VoIP router plugged in to the 628?  I looked through the 628 manual, and it has almost no setup instructions for VoIP.  Any suggestions gratefully received; the office has been more or less "down" for a week tomorrow, it's becoming a serious problem.

The DIR-628 router does not have any VOIP features built into it.  However, you will find the QoS features which will allow you to tune the network traffic and give the VOIP traffic more priority.

I have a Linksys SPA2102 and it works... voice features and all, except fax.
I have to connect it directly to the cable modem for it to work. Not sure if all voice features will be available to you.

I use the Vonage VT-2142.  I connected it via the 628 right out of the box, and my VOIP came up perfectly.  No tweaking of any settings was needed on either box.  As far as I know, you will need to keep the VOIP router but it will play nicely with the 628.
